Universal properties of Efimov physics beyond the scattering length approximation

Abstract

We calculate the low-lying energy spectrum for three trapped identical bosons interacting via a finite-range potential. The spectrum is compared to results from the zero-range model. The thresholds for trimer binding and atom-dimer binding are extracted and related to effective range corrections. Effective range corrections to Efimov physics and Borromean binding are two aspects of the same effect, and we connect these two regions qualitatively. The Borromean window becomes slightly narrower for substantial effective ranges. The structure at the atom-dimer threshold is an atom far away from the dimer and the major energy correction is due to the change of dimer energy with effective range. This structure becomes less pronounced when the effective range increases.

Finite-range effects in Efimov physics beyond the separable approximation

P. M. A. Mestrom, T. Secker, Ronen M. Kroeze +1 more

We study Efimov physics for three identical bosons interacting via a pairwise square-well potential, analyze the validity of the separable approximation as a function of the interaction strength, and investigate what is needed to improve this approximation. We find separable approximations to be accurate for potentials with just one (nearly) bound dimer state. For potentials with more bound or almost bound dimer states, these states need to be included for an accurate determination of the Efimov spectrum and the corresponding three-body observables. We also show that a separable approximation is insufficient to accurately compute the trimer states for energies larger than the finite-range energy even when the two-body $T$ matrix is highly separable in this energy regime. Additionally, we have analyzed three distinct expansion methods for the full potential that give exact results and thus improve on the separable approximation. With these methods, we demonstrate the necessity to include higher partial-wave components of the off-shell two-body $T$ matrix in the three-body calculations. Moreover, we analyze the behavior of the Efimov states near the atom-dimer threshold and observe the formation of non-Efimovian trimer states as the potential depth is increased. Our results can help to elaborate simpler theoretical models that are capable of reproducing the correct three-body physics in atomic systems.

Finite-range effects in energies and recombination rates of three identical bosons

Peder K. Sørensen, D. V. Fedorov, A. S. Jensen +1 more

We investigate finite-range effects in systems with three identical bosons. We calculate recombination rates and bound state spectra using two different finite-range models that have been used recently to describe the physics of cold atomic gases near Feshbach resonances where the scattering length is large. The models are built on contact potentials which take into account finite-range effects; one is a two-channel model and the other is an effective range expansion model implemented through the boundary condition on the three-body wavefunction when two of the particles are at the same point in space. We compare the results with the results of the ubiquitous single-parameter zero-range model where only the scattering length is taken into account. Both finite-range models predict variations of the well-known geometric scaling factor 22.7 that arises in Efimov physics. The threshold value at negative scattering length for creation of a bound trimer moves to higher or lower values depending on the sign of the effective range compared to the location of the threshold for the single-parameter zero-range model. Large effective ranges, corresponding to narrow resonances, are needed for the reduction to have any noticeable effect.

Efimov physics and the three-body parameter within a two-channel framework

Peder K. Sørensen, D. V. Fedorov, A. S. Jensen +1 more

We calculate shallow three-body bound states in the universal regime, defined by Efimov, with inclusion of both scattering length and effective range parameters. We find corrections to the universal scaling laws for large binding energies. For narrow resonances we find a distinct nonmonotonic behavior of the threshold at which the lowest Efimov trimer merges with the three-body continuum. The origin of the three-body parameter is related to the two-body atom-atom interactions in a physically clear model. Our results demonstrate that experimental information from narrow Feshbach resonances and/or mixed systems are of vital importance to pin down the relation of two- and three-body physics in atomic systems.

Universality in few-body Systems: from few-atoms to few-nucleons

Alejandro Kievsky, M. Gattobigio, Eric Garrido

Some aspects of universal properties are discussed in few-atom as well as in few- nucleon systems. When the two-body scattering length a is large the three-body system presents some peculiar characteristics such as the Efimov effect. In the present contribution, the zerorange theory deduced by V. Efimov is compared to results obtained using potential models. Accordingly range corrections are introduced. These corrections appear as a shift in the variable K * a with K * the three-body parameter. The three-boson spectrum, atom-dimer scattering and the recombination rate at threshold are analyzed using the finite-range theory proposed. In the case of nuclear systems, n – d scattering is discussed using the universal formula derived by Efimov. Furthermore, the spectrum up to N = 6 is discussed using the central Volkov potential.

Universal nature and finite-range corrections in elastic atom-dimer scattering below the dimer breakup threshold

Alejandro Kievsky, M. Gattobigio

We investigate universal behavior in elastic atom-dimer scattering below the dimer breakup threshold calculating the atom-dimer effective-range function $ak\mathrm{cot}\ensuremath{\delta}$. Using the He-He system as a reference, we solve the Schr\"odinger equation for a family of potentials having different values of the two-body scattering length $a$ and we compare our results to the universal zero-range form deduced by Efimov, $ak\mathrm{cot}\ensuremath{\delta}={c}_{1}(ka)+{c}_{2}(ka)\mathrm{cot}[{s}_{0}\mathrm{ln}({\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{*}a)+\ensuremath{\phi}(ka)]$, for selected values of the three-body parameter ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{*}$. Using the parametrization of the universal functions ${c}_{1},{c}_{2},\ensuremath{\phi}$ given in the literature, a good agreement with the universal formula is obtained after introducing a particular type of finite-range corrections. Furthermore, we show that the same parametrization describes a very different system: nucleon-deuteron scattering below the deuteron breakup threshold. Our analysis confirms the universal character of the process, and relates the pole energy in the effective-range function of nucleon-deuteron scattering to the three-body parameter ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{*}$.

Conditions for Efimov physics for finite-range potentials

Mathias Kirk Thøgersen, D. V. Fedorov, A. S. Jensen +2 more

We consider a system of three identical bosons near a Feshbach resonance in the universal regime with large scattering length usually described by model-independent zero-range potentials. We employ the adiabatic hyperspherical approximation and derive the rigorous large-distance equation for the adiabatic potential for finite-range interactions. The effective range correction to the zero-range approximation must be supplemented by a new term of the same order. The nonadiabatic term can be decisive. Efimov physics is always confined to the range between effective range and scattering length. The analytical results agree with numerical calculations for realistic potentials.
