Resonant Photon-Hydrogen-Atom Scattering

Abstract

We present a method of calculating elastic photon-hydrogen scattering at resonance fluorescence, where the result of Gavrila is invalid. The effects of the unitarity-violating direct nonresonant and crossed terms are also calculated and shown to be small, as expected.

Nonresonant effects in one- and two-photon transitions

Ulrich D. Jentschura, Peter J. Mohr

We investigate nonresonant contributions to resonant Rayleigh-scattering cross sections of atoms. The problematic nonresonant contributions set a limit to the accuracy to which atomic spectra determine energy levels. We discuss the off-resonance effects in one-photon transitions. We also show that off-resonance contributions for the 1S–2S two-photon transition in atomic hydrogen are negligible at current and projected levels of experimental accuracy. The possibility of a differential measurement for the detection of off-resonance effects in one-photon transitions in atomic hydrogen is discussed. PACS Nos.: 31.15-p, 12.20Ds

Intensity distribution shift for the resonant photon scattering on the hydrogen atom

Leonti N Labzowsky, Соловьёв Дмитрий Анатольевич

The role of nonresonant (NR) corrections in the resonant photon scattering process on the hydrogen atom is discussed. It is shown that the average energy of the emitted photons may not coincide with the average energy of the incident photons defined by the photon source spectral function. The discrepancy is due to the NR corrections and to the interaction with the vacuum.

Two-photon laser-assisted electron scattering on Hydrogen atom

A. S. Kornev, B. A. Zon

Synopsis We considered the influence of light-dressed-atom effect on two-photon laser-assisted electron-atom scattering in the Born approximation. We performed calculations for the ground state of a Hydrogen atom. For small scattering angles, the main contribution to the cross section is made by the combined process, when one of the photons is absorbed by the atomic electron and the second one by the scattered electron. However, in the UV region, when two-photon resonances with highly excited atomic states arise, the main contribution is determined by the inverse polarization Bremsstrahlung absorption.

Nonresonant multiphoton ionization in atomic hydrogen

Rajesh Radhakrishnan, R. B. Thayyullathil

The infinite summations over the complete set of unperturbed atomic states appearing in the $N$th-order perturbation theory for multiphoton ionization are performed using the Dalgarno-Lewis method. The relevant transition matrix elements are written in a closed integral form exhibiting all the analytic properties of the amplitude as a function of incident photon energy. The cross sections for two- and three-photon ionization for atomic hydrogen are calculated for both linearly and circularly polarized light with a wide range of photon energy spectrum including the near resonance, and numerical comparison is made with the values obtained by different methods.

Electron-atom scattering in a resonant laser field

K. Unnikrishnan

Dressed states of an atom in a classical laser field of frequency close to an atomic transition frequency are obtained, which are a considerable improvement over the usual two-level rotating-wave approximation. These wave functions are used in a calculation of the cross section for elastic electron-atom scattering in a laser field. Numerical calculations for electron-hydrogen scattering demonstrate that scattering involving absorption or emission of photons can be strongly influenced by coupling to the nonresonant states, regardless of the field strength. Inclusion of the counter-rotating terms in the calculation is shown to be essential for extending the applicability of the theory to scattering in nonresonant fields, where a first-order perturbation-theoretic treatment of the atom-field interaction would be expected to be quite justified.
