Abstract

The effect of two-pulse photon echoes at the complicated action on a two-level medium with large inhomogeneous broadening of supremely short and quasiresonant pulses is investigated. Two versions of the action sequence of both pulses are considered. It is shown that the temporal properties of the echo signal are depended largely on the action order of indicated pulses. The effect of suppression of the optical echoes in the both cases at the action on a medium of the supremely short zeroth 'area' pulse is predicted. The qualitative procedure of definition of the complicated echoes spatial properties has been proposed and applied. It is shown that in indicated cases the diagrams of the echo signal intensity direction are not so peaked as in the case of common light echo.

Photon echo in medium subjected simultaneously to extremely short and quasiresonant pulses

V Yu Man'kov, A Yu Parkhomenko, С. В. Сазонов

An investigation is made of a two-pulse photon echo in a two-level medium with strong inhomogeneous broadening, which is subjected simultaneously to extremely short and quasiresonant pulses. Two variants of the sequence of application of the two pulses are considered and it is shown that the kinetics of an echo signal depends largely on the sequence in which the pulses are applied. Suppression of the photon echo is predicted for both variants when a zero-are extremely short pulse is applied to a medium. A qualitative method for determination of the spatial characteristics of such a combined echo is proposed and used. It is shown that, in the investigated cases, the angular distributions of the echo-signal intensity in an extended medium are not as peaked as in the case of a conventional photon echo.

Superradiance and photon echo effects in the interaction of coherent optical pulses with inhomogeneously broadened systems

Sergey M. Zakharov, Edward A. Manykin

A theoretical analysis is given of the phenomena of superradiance and photon echo in the interaction of coherent light pulses with a resonant medium emitting inhomogeneously broadened lines. A delay of the superradiance signal is predicted. The properties of the response function of a two-level system and of the photon echo are considered.

Photon-echo behavior in the presence of extreme inhomogeneous broadening

Nozomu Takeuchi

Analysis of photon-echo behavior using single-mode excitation is given. It is shown that in the presence of extreme inhomogeneous broadening, the excitation with long pulses may display a complicated echo shape. Two typical cases are treated, one in which the pulses have equal length, and the other in which the pulses have equal electric-field strength. These show a large difference in echo behavior, especially for large excitation pulse areas.

Theoretical study of photon echoes associated with the coherent nonlinear optical effect in a resonant three-level system

M. Aihara, Humio Inaba

An analytical study of the photon echoes associated with the three-level system interacting resonantly with optical pulses possessing two different frequencies is performed. It is predicted that photon echoes arise at anomalous times corresponding to the correlation between the inhomogeneous broadenings for the different spectral lines as well as at the normal time expected in a simple two-level system. This new effect is caused by the coupling of the two resonant transitions through the common energy level. Furthermore, if the particle does not have inversion symmetry, the echoes with the sum or difference frequency of the exciting optical pulses can be observed in such a system. The quantitative analysis is also given for intensities, direction of propagation and polarizations of the anomalous echoes which depend upon the exciting pulses with different frequency.

Photon echo under excitation of a medium by pulses consisting of an arbitrary number of oscillations

N. V. Znamenskiı̆, С. В. Сазонов

Echo responses of a three-level medium formed by the λ-scheme of quantum transitions under exposure to optical pulses consisting of an arbitrary number of oscillations have been studied theoretically. The cases of pulses consisting of few optical oscillations (for which the concept of an envelope cannot be used) and combinations of such pulses and quasi-monochromatic resonance signals have been considered. The approach used can be reduced to the renormalization of dipole moments of allowed quantum transitions through their multiplication by coefficients depending on the shape and duration of pump pulses and having absolute values in the range from zero (for nonresonance pulses) to unity (for resonance quasi-monochromatic pulses and broadband pulses consisting of few oscillations, whose spectrum covers the quantum transitions). A general equation has been proposed for the pulse area. In the limit of a large number of oscillations, it transforms into the well-known definition of the area of a quasi-monochromatic signal. The characteristics of primary and longlived photon echoes have been analyzed in detail. It has been shown that, when a medium is exposed to only pulses consisting of a few oscillations, three echo responses of both types can be principally generated at each frequency of the λ-scheme. Introduction of quasi-monochromatic pulses in pump pulse series decreases the number of echoes, and their qualitative character has a non-commutative property with respect to pulse permutation in a series. The extension of the proposed approach to more complex schemes of quantum transitions with the large number of quantum levels faces no principal difficulties.

DEGENERATE PHOTON ECHOES

Masaharu Mitsunaga, M. K. Kim, Ravinder Kachru

The three-pulse stimulated photon echo has been considered as one of the most fundamental transient four wave mixing processes1, where each of the three excitation pulses induces a single elementary interaction process between a laser field and an inhomogeneously broadened two-level system., resulting in a burst of the fourth wave, i.e., echo. Now if four or more optical pulses are applied to a medium, a number of photon echoes should be expected, in general. At low excitation intensities where the perturbation theory is applicable, however, the dominant nonlinear process is still the three-pulse stimulated echo and consequently each echo signal is generated only by three of the preceding pulses. It is rather a remarkable result that the echo intensity is unaffected by the presence of all the rest of the pulses other than its three generators. With this in mind, it is theoretically and experimentally shown that by applying a single optical pulse (#1) propagating along k1 followed by N pairs of counter-propagating pulses (#2j (k2j) and #3j− (k3j = −k2j); j=1,…N) in various directions, it is possible to obtain N photon echoes along the direction -k1 opposite to the first pulse #1. We will call this degenerate photon echoes, degenerate in. the sense that the echoes are spatially overlapping and temporally simultaneous. When N=l, this scheme is reduced to the ordinary backward photon echo2,3. The doubly degenerate case (N=2) is illustrated in Fig. 1. The j-th echo will be generated by the set of pulses (#1, #2j, #3j) and appear at t = t3j + t2j − t1 where t1, i2j and t3j are the arrival times of the pulses #1, #2j and #3j, respectively.
