Let
D be a space of
2×n matrices. Then the face of the cone of all completely positive maps from
M2 into
Mn given by
D is an exposed face of the bigger cone of all decomposable positive linear maps if and only if the set of all rank one matrices in
D forms a subspace of
D together with zero and
D⊥ is spanned by rank one matrices.
A linear map
L from
Cn×n into
Cn×n is called a quantum channel if it is completely positive and trace preserving. The set
Ln of all such quantum channels is known to be a compact convex set. While the extreme points of
Ln can be characterized, not much is known about the structure of its higher dimensional faces. Using the so called Choi matrix
Z(L) associated with the quantum channel
L, we compute the maximum dimension of a proper face of
Ln, and in addition the possible dimensions of faces generated by
L when $rank \ Z(L)=2 $.
We construct a large class of indecomposable positive linear maps from the matrix algebra into the matrix algebra, which generate exposed extreme rays of the convex cone of all positive maps. We show that extreme points of the dual faces for separable states arising from these maps are parametrized by the Riemann sphere, and the convex hulls of the extreme points arising from a circle parallel to the equator have exactly the same properties with the convex hull of the trigonometric moment curve studied from combinatorial topology. Any interior points of the dual faces are boundary separable states with full ranks. We exhibit concrete examples of such states.
Let [Formula: see text] be a unital C*-subalgebra of the C*-algebra ℬ(ℋ) of all bounded operators on a complex separable Hilbert space ℋ. Let [Formula: see text] denote the convex set of all unital, linear, completely positive and normal maps of [Formula: see text] into itself. Using Stinespring's theorem, we present a criterion for an element [Formula: see text] to be extremal. When [Formula: see text], this criterion leads to an explicit description of the set of all extreme points of [Formula: see text]. We also obtain a quantum probabilistic analogue of the classical Birkhoff's theorem2 that every bistochastic matrix can be expressed as a convex combination of permutation matrices.
A new method of analysing positive bistochastic maps on the algebra of complex matrices [Formula: see text] has been proposed. By identifying the set of such maps with a convex set of linear operators on [Formula: see text], one can employ techniques from the theory of compact semigroups to obtain results concerning asymptotic properties of positive maps. It turns out that the idempotent elements play a crucial role in classifying the convex set into subsets, in which representations of extremal positive maps are to be found. It has been shown that all positive bistochastic maps, extremal in the set of all positive maps of [Formula: see text], that are not Jordan isomorphisms of [Formula: see text] are represented by matrices that fall into two possible categories, determined by the simplest idempotent matrices: one by the zero matrix, and the other by a one-dimensional orthogonal projection. Some norm conditions for matrices representing possible extremal maps have been specified and examples of maps from both categories have been brought up, based on the results published previously.
The purpose of this short note is to clarify and present a general version of an interesting observation by Piani and Mora (Physic. Rev. A 75, 012305 (2007)), linking complete positivity of linear maps on matrix algebras to decomposability of their ampliations. Let
Ai,
Ci be unital C*-algebras and let
αi be positive linear maps from
Ai to
Ci, i=1,2. We obtain conditions under which any positive map
β from the minimal C*-tensor product
A1⊗minA2 to
C1⊗minC2, such that $ α_1 \otimes α_2 \geq β$, factorizes as
β=γ⊗α2 for some positive map
γ. In particular we show that when
αi:Ai→B(Hi) are completely positive (CP) maps for some Hilbert spaces
Hi (i=1,2), and
α2 is a pure CP map and
β is a CP map so that
α1⊗α2−β is also CP, then
β=γ⊗α2 for some CP map
γ. We show that a similar result holds in the context of positive linear maps when
A2=C2=B(H) and
α2=id. As an application we extend \cite[IX Theorem]{PM}( revisited recently by Huber et al in \cite{HLLM}) to show that for any linear map
τ from a unital C*-algebra
A to a C*-algebra
C, if
τ⊗idk is decomposable for some
k≥2, where
idk is the identity map on the algebra
Mk(C) of
k×k matrices, then
τ is completely positive.
