Subpicosecond four-wave mixing in GaAs/ Alx Ga1−x As quantum wells

Karl Leo, Ernst Otto Göbel, Theo C. Damen +6 more

We investigate the properties of coherent exciton states in GaAs/${\mathrm{Al}}_{\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{Ga}}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$As quantum wells using the four-wave-mixing technique with subpicosecond time resolution. In the first part of this work, we show that many-body interactions in a solid manifest themselves in a line shape of the four-wave-mixing signal that is substantially different from the predictions of the generally used simple two-level model. In particular, the coherent interaction of the quasiparticles leads to a signal at negative delay times, in agreement with recent theoretical predictions. In the second part, we report in detail about experiments where energetically close exciton transitions are excited coherently with a short laser pulse. The quantum or polarization interference leads to the observation of quantum beats in the decay of the diffracted signal. These results demonstrate that quantum-beat spectroscopy can be applied to study intrinsic excitations in solids.

Femtosecond four-wave mixing spectroscopy on CdS crystal at room temperature

Иванин Константин Валерьевич, Andrey V. Leontyev, Vladimir S. Lobkov +4 more

The results of the femtosecond four-wave mixing measurements performed on the CdS crystal at room temperature are reported. The dephasing time T d = 180 fs was obtained. The anti-Stokes shift of the primary photon echo spectrum with respect to the excitation spectrum was observed. The some peculiarities of the coherent responses decay curves indicate that this optical dephasing is due to the exciton-exciton interaction. The stimulated photon echo decay curves appear to have a fast decay component (the time constant of approximately 4.5 ps) in case the energy of exciting pulses exceeds the threshold value of 0.4 μJ.

Effect of solvents on optical coherence properties of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots in solution detected by femtosecond four-wave mixing

H. Kouzai, Y. Hirosawa, Hayato Miyagawa +5 more

We report novel effect of solvents on optical coherence properties of CdSe/ZnS semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) in solution detected by femtosecond four-wave mixing (FWM) spectroscopy. The FWM signals of QDs show different time profiles and femtosecond coherence decays in three solvents. Our findings provide definite evidence that the interaction with solvent molecules predominantly determines optical coherence and line broadening properties of QDs in solution.
