Chaos and squeezing in several models of quantum optics

Abstract

Some quantum optical models possessing a transition from regular to chaotic dynamics and influence of 'quantum chaos' to squeezing are investigated. Exploring coherent states method and 1/N-expansion technique we have derived an appropriate system of nonlinear equations and demonstrate in computer simulations a change of squeezing degree time dependence.

Chaos and squeezing in quantum optics

Alexander V. Gorokhov

Some quantum optical models possessing a transition from regular to chaotic dynamics and influence of `quantum chaos' to squeezing are investigated. Particular cases of semiclassical dynamics of a single atom and cooperative system of these atoms with (2j + 1)--equidistant levels interacting with a quantized photon mode in an ideal cavity were considered. Corresponding equations of motion are received without the rotation-wave approximation. Chaotic behavior and squeezing degree time dependence were obtained in computer simulations for coupling constant values or order of the atomic frequency.

Squeezed states and quantum chaos

K. N. Alekseev, D. S. Priimak

We examine the dynamics of a wave packet that initially corresponds to a coherent state in the model of a quantum rotator excited by a periodic sequence of kicks. This model is the main model of quantum chaos and allows for a transition from regular behavior to chaotic in the classical limit. By doing a numerical experiment we study the generation of squeezed states in quasiclassical conditions and in a time interval when quantum-classical correspondence is well-defined. We find that the degree of squeezing depends on the degree of local instability in the system and increases with the Chirikov classical stochasticity parameter. We also discuss the dependence of the degree of squeezing on the initial width of the packet, the problem of stability and observability of squeezed states in the transition to quantum chaos, and the dynamics of disintegration of wave packets in quantum chaos.

Light squeezing at the transition to quantum chaos

K. N. Alekseev, Jan Peřina

We investigate theoretically the dynamics of squeezed state generation in nonlinear systems possessing a transition from regular to chaotic dynamics in the limit of a large number of photons. As an example, the model of a kicked Kerr oscillator is considered. We show that at the transition to quantum chaos the maximum possible degree of squeezing increases exponentially in time, in contrast to the regular dynamics, where the degree of squeezing increases only powerwise in time. We demonstrate the one-to-one correspondence of the degree of squeezing and the value of the local Lyapunov instability rate in the corresponding classical chaotic system.

We examine the dynamics of a wave packet that initially corresponds to a coherent state in the model of quantum kicked rotator. This main model of quantum chaos, which allows for a transition from regular to to chaotic behavior in the classical limit, may be realized in experiments with cold atoms. We study the generation of squeezed states in the quasiclassical limit and in a time interval when quantum-classical correspondence is yet well-defined. We find that the degree of squeezing depends on the degree of local instability in the system and increases with the Chirikov parameter of stochasticity. We discuss the dependence of the degree of squeezing on the initial width of the packet, the problems of stability and observability of squeezed states at the transition to quantum chaos, as well as the dynamics of wave packet destruction.

Quantum chaos in atom optics

Gerard J Milburn, Sigurd Dyrting

I shall discuss the quantum and classical dynamics of a class of nonlinear Hamiltonian systems. The discussion will be restricted to systems with one degree of freedom. Such systems cannot exhibit chaos, unless the Hamiltonians are time dependent. Thus we shall consider systems with a potential function that has a higher than quadratic dependence on the position and, furthermore, we shall allow the potential function to be a periodic function of time. This is the simplest class of Hamiltonian system that can exhibit chaotic dynamics. I shall show how such systems can be realized in atom optics, where very cold atoms interact with optical dipole potentials of a far-off resonance laser. Such systems are ideal for quantum chaos studies as (i) the energy of the atom is small and action scales are of the order of Planck's constant, (ii) the systems are almost perfectly isolated from the decohering effects of the environment and (iii) optical methods enable exquisite time dependent control of the mechanical potentials seen by the atoms.

Regular and Chaotic Coherent State Dynamics of Several Quantum Optical Models

Alexander V. Gorokhov, E. V. Rogacheva, Shiryaev, Alexander V.

The coherent state representations of the group $G = W_1 \otimes G_0$ (where $G_0 = SU(2), SU(1,1)$) are used in computer simulation of the dynamics of single two-level atom $(G_0 = SU(2))$ interacting with a quantized photon cavity mode - the Jaynes - Cummings model (JCM) without the rotating wave approximation and, in general, nonlinear in photon variables). The second case (hyperbolic Jaynes - Cummings model (HJCM), $G_0 = SU(1,1))$ corresponds to the quantum dynamics of quadratic nonlinear coupled oscillators (the parametric resonance on double field frequency and a three - wave parametric processes of nonlinear optics). Quasiclassical dynamical equations for parameters of approximately factorizable coherent states for these models are derived and regimes of motion for "atom" and field variables are analyzed.
