Propagation effects of seeded collective emission by two-photon excited oxygen atoms

A strong ultraviolet pumping laser propagating through the atmosphere could activate the medium and produce the forward and backward coherent air lasing. In this work, we present the theoretical analyses of forward and backward lasing dynamics in the long gain medium consisting of oxygen atoms. By numerically solving the semiclassical Maxwell-Bloch equations, we demonstrate that the atom density, the gain medium length, and the collisional decoherence rate substantially regulate the forward and backward air laser radiation at 845 nm. Especially, our study points out that lower atom density and moderate collisional decoherence rate are favorable for the backward radiation amplification in a long medium, since such conditions balance the competing processes of forward and backward radiation fields. The simulation shows that long medium backward air lasing becomes challenging in the oxygen atom system via double-photon pump, because the amplification can only occur around $z=0$, and the amplified backward radiation does not carry the spectral information of atoms throughout the medium. On the other hand, certain mechanisms such as variation of backward-seeding delay could possibly alleviate the suppression of backward amplification.

Optical pulse dynamics in active metamaterials with positive and negative refractive index

A. O. Korotkevich, Kathryn E. Rasmussen, Gregor Kovačič +3 more

We study numerically the propagation of two-color light pulses through a metamaterial doped with active atoms such that the carrier frequencies of the pulses are in resonance with two atomic transitions in the Λ configuration and that one color propagates in the regime of positive refraction and the other in the regime of negative refraction. In such a metamaterial, one resonant color of light propagates with positive and the other with negative group velocity. We investigate nonlinear interaction of these forward- and backward-propagating waves and find self-trapped waves, counterpropagating radiation waves, and hot spots of medium excitation.

The Hanle effect in forward scattering in excited media

B. A. Veklenko

A new method for calculating the density matrix of a quantized electromagnetic field which interacts with the environment in the presence of kinetic processes in the medium is suggested. This method accurately takes into account photon-photon quantum correlators and possesses certain symmetry properties, which substantially facilitate the summation of the Feynman diagrams that arise in the calculations. Forward scattering of resonance radiation by two-level gas atoms in a magnetic field is considered as an application. Insufficiency of a semiclassical description of this coherent process in excited media with the use of the unique tensor index of refraction is shown to follow from quantum electrodynamics. The introduction of one more function depending on the frequency of irradiation and the concentration of excited atoms is necessary. Experiments that simultaneously determine both this additional function and the standard refractive index of the medium are specified.
