Theory and Experiment on Stimulated Scatterig of Light in Nematics

Abstract

Theory for transient gain by stimulated scattering (SS) is rederived in simple terms. Orientational SS in forward direction has been achieved experimentally in a planar cell of nematic 5CB in a free-running pulse from a ruby laser. Measurements of the time evolution of SS signal and of its angular spectrum confirm theoretioal predictions.

We present a theoretical and experimental study of the molecular collective rotation induced in a nematic liquid crystal by a laser beam, when self-induced stimulated light scattering takes place. The model is accurate enough to obtain quantitative agreement with experimental results, including the observation of optical bistability and hysteresis. Exact plane-wave expressions for energy and angular-momentum exchange between light and matter are also derived.

Theorie der Lichtverstärkung in absorbierenden Medien

W. Rother

A general transient theory of light amplification in absorbing media is developed for small amplification and for small signal. The amplification by stimulated thermal Rayleigh scattering has been studied in detail for various shapes of the laser pulse. A transient gain is predicted when the frequencies of the pump and signal pulse are the same. The dependence of the amplification from the scattering angle was investigated. For narrow angles (Θ < 2 x 10-2 rad) scattering of higher order in angle was calculated. A method of measuring the Rayleigh linewidth with one laser pulse is proposed

Transient stimulated Raman scattering in lossy media

D. Cotter, Richard R. Wyatt

The small-signal theory of transient stimulated Raman scattering is extended to include the effects of focusing, diffraction and absorption losses for both the pump and scattered Stokes light. There is good quantitative agreement between the predicted and experimentally observed threshold for stimulated electronic Raman scattering in caesium vapour with picosecond laser pulses.

Amplification of Light in Absorbing Media: Stimulated Thermal Rayleigh Scattering

Werner Rother, H. Meyer, W. Kaiser

Using well defined input pulses the amplification by stimulated thermal Rayleigh scattering was investigated experimentally as a function of time (within the pulse), of absorption coefficient, and of interaction length. The frequency difference between the two interacting light pulses was varied with an accuracy better than Δν/ν = 10-8. Amplification was measured in the backward direction and at several degrees from the forward direction. The various experimental observations are in good agreement with theory. The possibility of determining material parameters in this amplifier system is discussed
