Abstract

We consider, both analytically and numerically, the evolution of two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear matter-wave pulses in a Bose-Einstein condensate with a disk-shaped trap and repulsive atom-atom interactions. Due to the strong confinement in the axial direction the sound speed of the system is ${c=(1/2}^{1/4}{)c}_{0},$ where ${c}_{0}$ is the corresponding value without the trap. From the 3D order-parameter equation of the condensate, we derive a soliton-bearing Kadomtsev-Petriashvili equation with positive dispersion. When the trapping potential is weak in two transverse directions, a low-depth plane dark soliton can propagate in the condensate with a changing profile but preserving its structure down to the boundary of the condensate. We show that high-depth plane dark solitons are unstable to long-wavelength transverse disturbances. The instability appears as a longitudinal modulation of the soliton amplitude decaying into vortices. We also show how a dark lumplike 2D nonlinear excitation can be excited in the system. Furthermore, a dark lump decaying algebraically in two spatial directions can propagate rather stable in the condensate, but disappears near the boundary of the condensate where two vortices are nucleated. The vortices move in opposite directions along the boundary and when meeting merge creating a new lump. Finally, we also provide results for head-on and oblique collisions of two lumps in the system.

Dark Lump Excitations in Bose-Einstein Condensates

Guoxiang Huang, Zhu Shan-Hua

We investigate the dynamics of two-dimensional matter-wave pulses in a Bose-Einstein condensate with disk-shaped traps. For the case of repulsive atom-atom interactions, a Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation with positive dispersion is derived using the method of multiple scales. The results show that it is possible to excite dark lump-like two-dimensional nonlinear excitations in the Bose-Einstein condensate.

Dynamics of dark solitons in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates

Guoxiang Huang, Jacob Szeftel, Shanhua Zhu

We develop a systematic analytical approach to consider the dynamics of linear and nonlinear excitations in trapped quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates with repulsive atom-atom interactions. We show that, for a condensate strongly confined in two transverse directions, the ground state of the system involves the high-order eigenmodes of the transverse confining potential in the transverse directions and effective high-order Thomas-Fermi wave functions in the axial direction. The linear excitations of the system have a Bogoliubov-type spectrum with the excitation frequency varying slowly along the axial direction. We find that, in a weak nonlinear approximation, the amplitude of a nonlinear excitation is governed by a variable coefficient Korteweg--de Vries equation with additional terms contributed from the transverse structure and the inhomogeneity in the axial direction of the condensate, which results in varying amplitude, width, and velocity for dark solitons. Because of the inhomogeneity the dark solitons undergo deformation and emit radiations when traveling along the axial direction. We finally demonstrate that a dark soliton will disintegrate into several ones plus a residual wave train when passing over a steplike potential.

Two-Dimensional Soliton Interaction for Multi-component Bose–Einstein Condensates

Sheng-Chang Li, Duan Wen-Shan

For two-component disk-shaped Bose–Einstein condensates with repulsive atom-atom interaction, the small amplitude, finite and long wavelength nonlinear waves can be described by a Kadomtsev–Petviashvili-I equation at the lowest order from the original coupled Gross–Pitaevskii equations. One- and two-soliton solutions of the Kadomtsev–Petviashvili-I equation are given, therefore, the wave functions of both atomic gases are obtained as well. The instability of a soliton under higher-order long wavelength disturbance has been investigated. It is found that the instability depends on the angle between two directions of both soliton and disturbance.

Solitons and solitary vortices in pancake-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates

Luca Salasnich, Boris A. Malomed

We study fundamental and vortical solitons in disk-morphed Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) subject to strong confinement along the axial direction. Starting from the three-dimensional (3D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE), we proceed to an effective two-dimensional (2D) nonpolynomial Schr\"odinger equation (NPSE) derived by means of the integration over the axial coordinate. Results produced by the latter equation are in very good agreement with those obtained from the full 3D GPE, including cases when the formal 2D equation with the cubic nonlinearity is unreliable. The 2D NPSE is used to predict the density profiles and dynamical stability of repulsive and attractive BECs with zero and finite topological charges in various planar trapping configurations, including the axisymmetric harmonic confinement and one-dimensional periodic potential. In particular, we find a stable dynamical regime that was not reported before, viz., periodic splitting and recombination of trapped vortices with topological charges 2 or 3 in the self-attractive BEC.

Matter-wave solitons in radially periodic potentials

Bakhtiyor B. Baizakov, Boris A. Malomed, Mario Salerno

We investigate two-dimensional (2D) states in Bose-Einstein condensates with self-attraction or self-repulsion, trapped in an axially symmetric optical-lattice potential periodic along the radius. The states trapped both in the central potential well and in remote circular troughs are studied. In the repulsive mode, a new soliton species is found, in the form of radial gap solitons. The latter solitons are completely stable if they carry zero vorticity (l=0) , while with l not equal 0 they develop a weak azimuthal modulation, which makes them rotating patterns, that persist indefinitely long. In addition, annular gap solitons may support stable azimuthal dark-soliton pairs on their crests. In remote troughs of the attractive model, stable localized states may assume a ringlike shape with weak azimuthal modulation, or shrink into solitons strongly localized in the azimuthal direction, which is explained in the framework of an averaged 1D equation with the cyclic azimuthal coordinate. Numerical simulations of the attractive model also reveal stable necklacelike patterns, built of several strongly localized peaks. Dynamics of strongly localized solitons circulating in the troughs is studied too. While the solitons with sufficiently small velocities are completely stable, fast solitons gradually decay, due to the leakage of matter into the adjacent trough, under the action of the centrifugal force. Investigation of head-on collisions between strongly localized solitons traveling in circular troughs shows that collisions between in-phase solitons in a common trough lead to collapse, while pi-out-of-phase solitons bounce many times, but eventually merge into a single one, without collapsing. In-phase solitons colliding in adjacent circular troughs also tend to merge into a single soliton.
