Photon distributions for nonclassical fields with coherent components

Abstract

Nonclassical fields with coherent components generated in a large number of optical processes including losses can be characterized by a Gaussian Wigner function centered around the mean value of the field. The photon-number distributions for such fields are calculated and the numerical results are presented for a range of parameters. As a special case we give the number distributions for photons produced in down-conversion problems. We also give the analytical expression for the photoelectron distributions.

Photon-number distributions for quantum fields generated in nonlinear optical processes

G. S. Agarwal, G. Adam

We show that in a large class of nonlinear optical processes which are used to generate the squeezed states of the radiation field, the quantum state of the generated radiation is given by a Gaussian Wigner function. This is so even when losses in the medium are included. The photon-number distributions for such fields are evaluated. The number distributions exhibit oscillatory character for the range of parameters for which the field is squeezed.

Wigner-function description of quantum-mechanical nonlocality

Anu Venugopalan, Rupamanjari Ghosh

Fields generated in a large number of nonlinear-optical processes (including those with losses) have a Wigner distribution that is Gaussian centered around the mean value of the field. We show that the Bell inequality for an optical-correlation experiment with two coupled modes generated in a nonlinear process can be expressed as an inequality relating to the parameters of the underlying Wigner distribution function. We consider examples of parametric down-conversion and a two-mode squeezed laser, which can be used in experiments to demonstrate quantum nonlocality.

Nonclassical effects in photon statistics of atomic optical bistability

Daniel B. Erenso, Ron Adams, Hua Deng +2 more

Homodyne statistics of light generated by an atomic system exhibiting optical bistability are analyzed. Using the dynamical equations of motion for a single atom in a coherently driven cavity in the good cavity limit, we show that the homodyne field can be described in terms of two independent real Gaussian stochastic processes and a coherent component. By making a Karhunen-Lo\`eve expansion of the field variables we derive the generating function for the photoelectron statistics. From this generating function photoelectron-counting distribution, factorial moments, and waiting-time distribution are obtained analytically. These quantities are directly measurable in photon-counting experiments. We show that the homodyne field exhibits many interesting nonclassical features including nonclassical effects in higher-order factorial moments.

Photon-number distributions for fields with Gaussian Wigner functions

S. Chaturvedi, Venkatraman Srinivasan

We compute the generating function for the photon-number distribution for single-mode fields described by a Gaussian Wigner distribution considered previously by Agarwal and Adam [Phys. Rev. A 38, 750 (1988)] and obtain simpler formulas for the photon-number distribution than those given by them. We also give analytical results for the factorial cumulants of the photon-number distribution and consider some limiting cases.

Nonclassicality of Any Number Photon Added-then-subtractedand Subtracted-then-added Coherent States

廖小鸽 LIAO Xiao-ge, 张浩亮 ZHANG Hao-liang, 胡利云 HU Li-yun

We study the nonclassical properties of arbitrary number photon creation-then-annihilation operation(CA) and annihilation-then-creation operation(AC) to the coherent states, and give the analytical expression.Because of the noncoummutativity of between annihilation operator and the creation operator, the states generated by AC operation and CA operation have different nonclassical properties. We firstly derive the analytical expressions of normalization factor for these states, and then study the statistics characteristics by some nonclassical properties, such as the Mandel Q parameters, the photon number distribution and the Wigner function. It is shown that these states have a very distinct nonclassical properties, and the nonclassical state generated by AC operation can present more clear nonclassicality than those generated by the CA operation.

Gaussian-Wigner distributions and hierarchies of nonclassical states in quantum optics: The single-mode case

Arvind, Narasimhaiengar Mukunda, R. Simon

A recently introduced hierarchy of states of a single-mode quantized radiation field is examined for the case of centered Gaussian-Wigner distributions. It is found that the onset of squeezing among such states signals the transition to the strongly nonclassical regime. Interesting consequences for the photon-number distribution, and explicit representations for them, are presented. The effects of nonideal detection are also carefully analyzed.
