Abstract

Numerical solutions of the full semiconductor Bloch equations for femtosecond pump-probe excitation are presented. Transient absorption oscillations, optical Stark effect and ultrafast bleaching and recovery of the exciton are reported. A transient population build-up and decay on the time-scale of the pump-pulse is calculated.

Transient many-body effects in the semiconductor optical Stark effect: A numerical study

Rolf H. Binder, Stephan W. Koch, Markus Lindberg +2 more

A comprehensive numerical study of the optical Stark effect and associated phenomena in semiconductors is presented. The results are obtained from numerical solutions of the full semiconductor Bloch equations for bulk and quantum-well structures. Coherent oscillations, the optical Stark effect, and adiabatic following, i.e., ultrafast bleaching and recovery of the exciton, are discussed. The relative importance of the different contributions in the semiconductor Bloch equations is identified. Optical-absorption spectra are computed for different exciton dephasing models and a large variety of pump-probe excitation parameters.

Femtosecond recovery of exciton bleaching in the optical Stark effect

Jason P. Sokoloff, S. G. Lee, R. Jin +5 more

The optical Stark effect of excitons in semiconductors, where the exciton resonance is blue shifted by an off-resonance light beam, has been actively studied. Here we report on the observation of a very fast recovery of the exciton bleaching for an off-resonance excitation condition in a quantum well sample at room temperature. The good agreement between the experimental results and our numerical calculations of the time-resolved absorption spectra suggests a coherent transient population buildup and decay occurring on the time scale of the pump pulse.

Ultrafast adiabatic following in semiconductors

Rolf H. Binder, Stephan W. Koch, Markus Lindberg +2 more

The full semiconductor Bloch equations are solved to analyze the ultrafast exciton dynamics in semiconductors. Transient adiabatic following is obtained for large detunings and arbitrary intensities, leading to exciton Stark shift, bleaching, and recovery on the time scale of the pump pulse. The many-body Coulomb effects strongly influence the semiconductor response for resonant excitation conditions, almost doubling the effective Rabi frequency of the applied field.

Dynamic Stark effect of exciton and continuum states in CdS

Nasser N. Peyghambarian, Stephan W. Koch, Markus Lindberg +2 more

The first observation of the optical Stark effect of electron-hole continuum states in addition to the bound-exciton states is reported under femtosecond excitation conditions chosen to minimize the generation of real carriers. The experimental results agree well with calculations using the generalized semiconductor Bloch equations. The theory shows that the commonly used adiabatic approximation is correct only for pulses which are longer than the coherence decay time. For shorter pulses coherent dynamic effects strongly influence the spectral changes.

Direct observation of the excitonic ac Stark splitting in a quantum well

Michele Saba, Francesco Quochi, Cristiano Ciuti +5 more

Ultrafast pump-probe measurements evidence the dynamical Stark splitting in the exciton absorption spectrum of a single semiconductor quantum well. The intensity of the Stark sidebands in the spectrum is comparable to the linear absorption and their separation scales as the pump field amplitude. In the time domain the Rabi oscillations are observed. The semiconductor Bloch equations solved in the Hartree-Fock approximation demonstrate that the coherent exciton-light coupling dominates over the many-body dephasing.

Optical Stark Effect in a Quantum Dot: Ultrafast Control of Single Exciton Polarizations

Thomas Unold, Kerstin Mueller, Christoph Lienau +2 more

We report the first experimental study of the optical Stark effect in single semiconductor quantum dots (QD). For below band gap excitation, two-color pump-probe spectra show dispersive line shapes caused by a light-induced blueshift of the excitonic resonance. The line shape depends strongly on the excitation field strength and is determined by the pump-induced phase shift of the coherent QD polarization. Transient spectral oscillations can be understood as rotations of the QD polarization phase with negligible population change. Ultrafast control of the QD polarization is demonstrated.
