Interpreting quantum states of electromagnetic field in time-dependent linear media

Abstract

Recently, Pedrosa and Rosas [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 010402 (2009)] investigated the quantum states of an electromagnetic field in time-dependent linear media using a Hermitian linear invariant. The wave function obtained by them is represented in terms of an arbitrary weight function $g({\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{l})$. Since the type of wave function varies depending on the choice of $g({\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{l})$ in their problem, it may be a difficult task to construct a coherent state that resembles the classical state from their theory. We suggest, on the basis of a non-Hermitian linear invariant, another quantum state that is a kind of coherent state. The expectation value of canonical variables in this alternate state follows an exact classical trajectory. For a simple case in which the time dependence of the parameters $\ensuremath{\epsilon}(t)$, $\ensuremath{\mu}(t)$, and $\ensuremath{\sigma}(t)$ disappears, we showed that the quantum energy expectation value in the alternate quantum state recovers exactly to the classical energy in the limit $\ensuremath{\hbar}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$. This alternate state leads to the correspondence between the quantum and the classical behaviors of physical observables in a high-energy limit.

Novel quantum description for nonadiabatic evolution of light wave propagation in time-dependent linear media

Halim Lakehal, Mustapha Maamache, Jeong Ryeol Choi

A simple elegant expression of nonadiabatic light wave evolution is necessary in order to have a deeper insight for complicated optical phenomena in light science as well as in everyday life. Light wave propagation in linear media which have time-dependent electromagnetic parameters is investigated by utilizing a quadratic invariant of the system. The time behavior of the nonadiabatic geometric phase of the waves that yield a cyclic nonadiabatic evolution is analyzed in detail. Various quantum properties of light waves in this situation, such as variances of electric and magnetic fields, uncertainty product, coherent and squeezed states, and their classical limits, are developed. For better understanding of our research, we applied our analysis in a particular case. The variances of the fields D and B are illustrated and their time behaviors are addressed. Equivalent results for the corresponding classical systems are deduced from the study of the time evolution of the appropriate coherent and squeezed states.

Coherent States and Transition Probabilities in a Time-Dependent Electromagnetic Field

I.A. Malkin, Vladimir I. Man’ko, D. A. Trifonov

New time-dependent invariants for the $N$-dimensional nonstationary harmonic oscillator and for a charged particle in a varying axially symmetric classical electromagnetic field are found. For these quantum systems, coherent states are introduced, and the Green's functions are obtained in closed form. For a special type of electromagnetic field which is constant in the remote past and future, the transition amplitudes between both arbitrary coherent states and energy eigenstates are calculated and expressed in terms of classical polynomials. The adiabatic approximation and adiabatic invariants are discussed. In the special case of a particle with time-dependent mass, the solution of the Schr\"odinger equation is found. The symmetry of nonstationary Hamiltonians is discussed, and the noncompact group $U(N, 1)$ is shown to be the group of dynamical symmetry for the time-dependent $N$-dimensional oscillator.

Quantum electromagnetic waves in nonstationary linear media

I. A. Pedrosa

We present a quantum description of electromagnetic waves propagating through time-dependent homogeneous nondispersive conducting and nonconducting linear media without charge sources. Based on the Coulomb gauge and the quantum invariant method, we find the exact wave functions for this problem. In addition, we construct coherent and squeezed states for the quantized electromagnetic waves and evaluate the quantum fluctuations in coordinate and momentum space as well as the uncertainty product for each mode of the electromagnetic field.

Non-Hermitian time-dependent quantum systems with real energies

ALVARO DE SOUZA DUTRA, Marcelo Hott, V. G. C. S. dos Santos

In this work we intend to study a class of time-dependent quantum systems with non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, particularly those whose Hermitian counterpart are important for the comprehension of posed problems in quantum optics and quantum chemistry, which consists of an oscillator with time-dependent mass and frequency under the action of a time-dependent imaginary potential. The propagator for a general time-dependence of the parameters and the wave-functions are obtained explicitly for constant frequency and mass and a linear time-dependence in the potential. The wave-functions are used to obtain the expectation value of the Hamiltonian. Although it is neither Hermitian nor PT symmetric, the case under study exhibits real values of energy.

Analyzing generalized coherent states for a free particle

Mustapha Maamache, Abderrezak Khatir, Halim Lakehal +1 more

Despite the didactic importance of a free particle in quantum mechanics, its coherent state analysis has long been untouched. It is only recently that it has been noticed and studied in the semiclassical domain. While the previously known solutions, reported by Bagrov et al. for a free particle, are described using the linear non-Hermitian invariant operator, we show in this work that the general solution of the Schrödinger equation can also be naturally derived using a simpler method based on an Hermitian linear invariant operator. According to this, an exact Gaussian wave function that corresponds to a coherent state solution is obtained. An interpretation for such general quantum solution designated within the Lewis-Riesenfeld framework is provided and, further, quantum-classical correspondence principle for the system is reexamined.
