Controlled hysteresis in optical systems surrounded by two feedback loops

Abstract

The absorptive bistability in a nonlinear optical system surrounded by two feedback loops is studied. The role of the nonlinear element is played by a cell with Λ-type atom vapors placed in a unidirectional ring cavity. The feedback includes two electromagnetic fields interacting with two atomic transitions. A two-dimensional domain of stability was found in the coordinates of field intensities at the input. The dependence of its shape on the values of different parameters of the optical system is studied. The input-output curves corresponding to different trajectories in the domain of stability are obtained.

Optical bistability in nonlinear system with two loops of feedback

George P. Miroshnichenko, Alexander Trifanov

A model of nonlinear optical system surrounded by two loops of feedback is investigated. The cell with the vapor of rubidium - type atoms is taken in the capacity of nonlinear element. Two modes of near-resonant electromagnetic field interacting with the cell are involved in the feedback. Two-dimensional optical bistability domain in location of input field intensities is obtained and dependence of its form and magnitude from the system parameters (photon detunings, feedback factor etc.) is investigated. "Input - output" relations corresponding to different trajectories in the bistability domain are obtained. Cross-hysteresis is studied.

Control of optical bistability in the nonlinear regime of two-sided cavity quantum electrodynamics

Liyong Wang, Zheng Tan, Yifu Zhu +1 more

We investigate the optical bistability behavior of a two-sided cavity quantum electrodynamics system. The nonlinear input–output relation of the atom–cavity system coupled by two input light fields from two ends of the cavity can be controlled by a control light from the free space. Different from the common optical bistability phenomenon in the atom–cavity system, two separate bistability regions are observed. The bistability threshold and hysteresis loop can be well controlled by the control light. Because of field interference, the output light intensity becomes different with varying the relative phase of two incident fields. The output field intensity at the threshold of the first bistability region approaches zero with either increasing the detuning or lowering the intensity of the control light; thus, the perfect photon absorption condition is extended and a broadband near-perfect photon absorber is realized. Furthermore, we show an asymmetrical transmission feature due to field interference.

Double-cavity optical bistability and all-optical switching in four-level N-type atomic system

Yu-Yuan Chen, Yanan Li, Ren-Gang Wan

We analyze the absorptive and hybrid absorptive–dispersive double-cavity optical bistability behavior in a four-level N-type atomic system driven by two optical fields circulating inside two independently unidirectional ring cavities and a trigger field outside the cavities. In this system, the two-photon absorption and cross Kerr nonlinearity play significant roles in the formation of bistability and can be controlled efficiently due to the quantum interference effect, and then the resulting nonlinear behavior exhibits different features from the two/three-level schemes. It is shown that the threshold values and hysteresis cycle width of the bistable curve can be manipulated via the adjustment of the system parameters. Meanwhile, we also obtain double-beam optical multistability. When adding positive and negative pulses to the cavity input, all-optical steady-state switching for the two cavity outputs can be achieved simultaneously. Therefore, the proposed scheme may have potential applications in all-optical communication and computing.

Controlling the shape and direction of hysteresis cycle in an optical bistability system with three-level atoms

Amitabh Joshi, Wenge Yang, Min Xiao

We experimentally demonstrate ‘backward’ hysteresis loop in optical bistability from an optical ring cavity containing three-level (Λ-type) rubidium atoms. Switching from ‘backward’ to normal hysteresis loop can be controlled by coupling field and cavity detuning.

Optical bistability in a five-level cascade EIT medium: an analytical approach

Dinh Xuan Khoa, Le Van Doai, Le Nguyen Mai Anh +4 more

We propose an optical bistability (OB) model consisting of a five-level cascade electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium placed in a unidirectional ring cavity. An input-output intensity relationship for a weak probe light field is derived as a function of parameters of a strong coupling light and cooperation C. The OB behaviors of the system are investigated with variation of the parameters. It has been shown that the OB behaviors occur simultaneously in three EIT windows. Furthermore, switching thresholds and the hysteresis loop can be controlled by the parameters of the coupling light and/or a cooperation of atomic medium. Such controllable OB behaviors can find interesting applications in bistable photonic devices working at low light intensity and multiple frequencies.

Effective control and switching of optical multistability in a three-level V-type atomic system

Abdelsalam H. M. Abdelaziz, Amarendra K. Sarma

We theoretically analyze the behavior of single optical bistability (OB), double OB, and tristability (OT) in a three-level V-type atomic system confined in a unidirectional optical ring cavity. The physics behind the emergence of various bistable and tristable states, and switching from the absorptive to the dispersive characteristics, are explored. The role of probe- and control-field detunings on the input-output characteristics is probed. Further, it is found that the switching between various bistable phenomena is defined by the ratio between the absolute peak values of the parameters describing dispersion and absorption, respectively. This ratio sets a criterion for obtaining absorptive OB, OT, double OB, and dispersive OB. The role of control-field intensity and detuning as well as the cooperation parameter on the input-output characteristics are explored. Finally, a scheme is discussed to control the width of the middle branch of double OB and OT as well as single OB.
