Abstract

The temporal dynamics of photorefractive and absorptive gains during two-wave mixing in Stark geometry photorefractive quantum wells are investigated using moving gratings to break the symmetry of the photorefractive diodes to achieve nonreciprocal energy transfer between two coherent laser beams.

Nonreciprocal energy transfer between two coherent laser beams during two-wave mixing requires a photorefractive phase shift between the interference pattern and the resulting space charge. The symmetry of the Stark geometry photorefractive quantum wells forbids a phase shift using either dc or ac fields. We present the first experimental demonstration of nonreciprocal energy transfer during two-wave mixing using moving gratings. Optical energy exchange is observed in photorefractive p-i-n quantum well diodes with photorefractive gains approaching 1000 cm−1 and exhibiting complex spatio-temporal dynamics.

Two-wave mixing in stark geometry photorefractive quantum wells under a magnetic field

Using a new method for measuring photorefractive two-wave mixing gain, we present the first experimental demonstration of nonreciprocal energy transfer during two-wave mixing under an external magnetic field. The nonreciprocal energy transfer is observed with mixing gains approaching 164 cm-1 exhibiting the characters of nonlinearity and saturation. A simple model of negative differential mobility and ultra fast carriers lifetime was proposed to explain these results.

Using a modified method for measuring photorefractive two-wave mixing gain, we presented the experimental demonstration of nonreciprocal energy transfer during two-wave mixing under an external magnetic field. The nonreciprocal energy transfer is observed with mixing gain approaching 164 cm−1 and showed the characteristics of nonlinearity and saturation. Two-wave mixing in photorefractive AlGaAs/GaAs quantum wells

Q. N. Wang, David D. Nolte, M. R. Melloch

We have observed two-wave mixing in semi-insulating AlGaAs/GaAs multiple quantum well structures at wavelengths near the exciton absorption. The photorefractive index changes are caused by the Franz–Keldysh effect on quantum-confined excitons. Photorefractive gains larger than 200 cm−1 are obtained for the first time at wavelengths near 836 nm using stationary fringes and dc applied fields up to 5 kV/cm. The direction of energy transfer between the two beams is determined by the direction of applied electric field.
