Abstract

We present an analysis based on the extrapolation of finite-size results to the infinite one-dimensional spin-(1/2) dimerized isotropic Heisenberg system for the whole range of the dimerization parameter \ensuremath{\delta} (\ensuremath{\Vert}\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\Vert}\ensuremath{\le}1) at zero temperature. This system undergoes a transition at \ensuremath{\delta}=0, and a gap opens in the spectrum of elementary excitations. The exponent \ensuremath{\nu}, which characterizes the opening of the gap, is estimated with use of the finite-size results (with size up to N=18). We investigate two finite-size-scaling hypotheses, assuming a pure power-law behavior [case (1)], or taking into account logarithmic corrections [case (2)]. To estimate \ensuremath{\nu}, we use the derivative of the reciprocal of the gap, the derivative of the gap, and the Callan-Symanzik function. We show that the first of these is less affected by finite-size corrections than are the other two. Using it, we have obtained, in case (1), \ensuremath{\nu}=0.71\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01, in agreement with previous estimates, and in case (2), \ensuremath{\nu}=0.668\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.001, in very good agreement with the value \ensuremath{\nu}=(2/3) conjectured by den Nijs. We also show that, far from criticality, the ground-state energy per site may be described by the form \ensuremath{\Vert}\ensuremath{\delta}${\ensuremath{\Vert}}^{x}$ with x=1.34\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02. However, results for the derivative of this quantity show a different functional dependence upon \ensuremath{\delta}, at least for \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0.4. In fact, both the values of the ground-state energy and its derivative agree with the third-order perturbation theory of Harris, with agreement improving as \ensuremath{\delta} approaches 1.

Finite size study of the spin-1/2 dimerised Heisenberg chain

G. Spronken, B. Fourcade, Yves Lépine

The authors present the results of a finite size analysis of the one-dimensional spin-1/2 dimerised Heisenberg chain. The value of the gap exponent, nu , is obtained using two extrapolation procedures. When logarithmic corrections are taken into account, they obtain the values nu =0.668+or-0.001 and nu =0.667+or-0.002, in good agreement with the conjectured value nu =2/3. They compare these results with those obtained assuming a pure power-law behaviour.

Scaling of excitations in dimerized and frustrated spin- 12 chains

Davide Controzzi, C. Degli Esposti Boschi, F. Ortolani +1 more

We study the finite-size behavior of the low-lying excitations of spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg chains with dimerization and next-to-nearest neighbors interaction ${J}_{2}$. The numerical analysis, performed using density-matrix renormalization group, confirms previous exact diagonalization results and shows that, for different values of the dimerization parameter $\ensuremath{\delta}$, the elementary triplet and singlet excitations present a clear scaling behavior in a wide range of $l=L∕\ensuremath{\xi}$ (where $L$ is the length of the chain and $\ensuremath{\xi}$ is the correlation length). At ${J}_{2}={J}_{2c}$, where no logarithmic corrections are present, we compare the numerical results with finite-size predictions for the sine-Gordon model obtained using L\"uscher's theory. For small $\ensuremath{\delta}$ we find a very good agreement for $l\ensuremath{\gtrsim}4$ or 7 depending on the excitation considered.

Finite-size-scaling study of the spin-1 Heisenberg-Ising chain with uniaxial anisotropy

Robert S. Botet, Rémi Jullien, M. Kolb

Finite-cell calculations (up to $N=12$ spins) have been performed on the spin-1 Heisenberg-Ising chain with an uniaxial anisotropy, $\mathcal{H}=\ensuremath{\Sigma}{i}^{}[{S}_{i}^{x}{S}_{i+1}^{x}+{S}_{i}^{y}{S}_{i+1}^{y}+\ensuremath{\lambda}{S}_{i}^{z}{S}_{i+1}^{z}+D{({S}_{i}^{z})}^{2}]$. From a scaling analysis of the gap between the ground state and the first excited state, a phase diagram has been drawn in the ($\ensuremath{\lambda},D$) plane and the transition lines between the "ferromagnetic," $X\ensuremath{-}Y$," "singlet-ground-state," and "antiferromagnetic" phases have been estimated for the infinite-$N$ system. One of the most important results is that a singlet-ground-state phase with a nonzero gap exists in an extended range of $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ and $D$ values including the Heisenberg point $\ensuremath{\lambda}=1$, $D=0$, in contrast with the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ case. Moreover, for $\ensuremath{\lambda}\ensuremath{\simeq}1$, the gap decreases with increasing positive anisotropy $D$, goes through a minimum, estimated to be zero, and then increases with $D$.

Scaling exponents in spin- 1 2 Heisenberg chains with dimerization and frustration studied with the density-matrix renormalization group

Manoranjan Kumar, S. Ramasesha, Diptiman Sen +1 more

In conformal field theory, key properties of spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chains, such as the ground state energy per site and the excitation gap, scale with dimerization $\ensuremath{\delta}$ as ${\ensuremath{\delta}}^{\ensuremath{\alpha}}$ with known exponents $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ and logarithmic corrections. The logarithmic corrections vanish in a spin chain with nearest $(J=1)$ and next-nearest-neighbor interactions $({J}_{2})$, for ${J}_{2\mathrm{c}}=0.2411$. Density-matrix renormalization group analysis of a frustrated spin chain with no logarithmic corrections yields the field theoretic values of $\ensuremath{\alpha}$, and the scaling relation is valid up to the physically realized range, $\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\sim}0.1$. However, chains with logarithmic corrections $({J}_{2}<0.2411\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{J})$ are more accurately fit by simple power laws with different exponents for physically realized dimerizations. We show the exponents decreasing from approximately $3∕4$ to $2∕3$ for the spin gap and from approximately $3∕2$ to $4∕3$ for the energy per site, and error bars in the exponent also decrease as ${J}_{2}$ approaches to ${J}_{2\mathrm{c}}$.

Renormalization group and other calculations for the one-dimensional spin-1/2 dimerized Heisenberg antiferromagnet

J. N. Fields, Henk W. J. Blöte, J. C. Bonner

A zero-temperature renormalization group (RG) approach is applied to the one-dimensional, spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg dimerized (alternating) chain. Specifically, the ground state energy and lowest-lying spectral excitations are examined. The calculation indicates the existence of a gap in the spectrum of the dimerized chain which vanishes only in the limit of a uniform spin chain, in contrast to a recent Green’s function approach. The RG results are in reasonable agreement with numerical extrapolations on the exact eigenvalue spectrum of finite chains of up to 12 spins. Both methods are compared with several other approximate treatments of the Heisenberg system, and tested by comparison with exact results for the spin-1/2 XY dimerized chain.

Ground State Properties of One DimensionalS=1/2Heisenberg Model with Dimerization and Quadrumerization

Wei Chen, Kazuo Hida

The one dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg model with dimerization and quadrumerization is studied by means of the numerical exact diagonalization of finite size systems. Using the phenomenological renormalization group and finite size scaling law, the ground state phase diagram is obtained in the isotropic case. It exhibits a variety of the ground states which contains the S=1 Haldane state, S=1 dimer state and S=1/2 dimer state as limiting cases. The gap exponent $ν$ is also calculated which coincides with the value for the dimerization transition of the isotropic Heisenberg chain. In the XY limit, the phase diagram is obtained analytically and the comparison is made with the isotropic case.
