High Resolution Spectroscopy of Solids Using an Amplitude Squeezed Diode Laser

Y Fukuda, Akira Mashimo, Takako Muramoto

High resolution spectroscopy using an FM noise of an amplitude squeezed diode laser is applied to a solid state sample for the first time. The ruby R1 lines are examined and the observed line width of the R1 line;-1/2(4A2)~-1/2(E) is 30 MHz(HWHM), which is limited by the short time laser width. The width of the ruby R2 line 1/2(4A2)~-1/2(A) is wider than 125MHz MH, which is restricted within the band widths of the optical detecter and the amplifier.

Search for a Stokes' Shift in the R1 Lines of Ruby

Peter J. Warter, Ramon U. Martinelli, James W. Brault

Virtually simultaneous measurements of the emission and absorption profiles of the ruby R1 line show that no significant Stokes' shift is present. Observations were made on rubies of 0.0055% and 0.0186% Cr by weight with both crystallographic orientations and both polarizations in the temperature range from 77° to 153°K. The position of the peaks in the absorption line matched those of the emission line to within 0.002 cm−1. Shifts of this size or smaller cause no significant change in the operating characteristics of a laser.
