Phase separation and stripes in a boson version of a doped quantum antiferromagnet

Massimo Boninsegni

A theoretical investigation of boson versions of the $t\ensuremath{-}J$ and $t\ensuremath{-}{J}_{z}$ models on the square lattice is carried out, by means of Green's function Monte Carlo simulations. Accurate ground-state energy estimates as a function of hole doping are obtained, allowing one to investigate the stability of the uniform phase against separation of the system into hole-rich and hole-free phases. In the boson $t\ensuremath{-}{J}_{z}$ model, such a separation is found to occur for arbitrarily small values of ${J}_{z},$ at sufficiently low hole doping. Phase separation is suppressed in the boson $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model, which features a uniform ground state at any doping, for $J/t\ensuremath{\lesssim}1.5.$ Relevance of this study to the corresponding fermion models is discussed. Fermi statistics enhances the tendency toward phase separation; in particular, phase separation at low doping is predicted in the fermion $t\ensuremath{-}{J}_{z}$ model at any ${J}_{z}>0.$ The possible formation of stripes of holes is investigated for systems featuring both periodic and cylindrical boundary conditions. No evidence of a striped ground state is found in either the $t\ensuremath{-}J$ or $t\ensuremath{-}{J}_{z}$ boson models.

Stability and properties of striped phases in systems of interacting fermions or hard-core bosons

Volodymyr Derzhko

In this thesis we deal with the specific collective phenomena in condensed matter - striped-structures formation. Such structures are observed in different branches of condensed matter physics, like surface physics or physics of high-temperature superconductors. These quasi-one-dimensional objects appear in theoretical analyses as well as in computer simulations of different theoretical models. Here, the main topic of interest is the stability of striped structures in certain quantum models, where a tendency towards crystallization competes with a tendency towards phase separation, and some basic properties of these structures.

Indications of spin-charge separation at short distance and stripe formation in the extendedt-Jmodel on ladders and planes

The recently discussed tendency of holes to generate nontrivial spin environments in the extended two-dimensional $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model [G. Martins, R. Eder, and E. Dagotto, Phys. Rev. B 60, R3716 (1999)] is here investigated using computational techniques applied to ladders with several number of legs. This tendency is studied also with the help of analytic spin-polaron approaches directly in two dimensions. Our main result is that the presence of robust antiferromagnetic correlations between spins located at both sides of a hole either along the x or y axis, observed before numerically on square clusters, is also found using ladders, as well as applying techniques based on a string-basis expansion. This so-called ``across-the-hole'' nontrivial structure exists even in the two-leg spin-gapped ladder system, and leads to an effective reduction in dimensionality and spin-charge separation at short-distances, with a concomitant drastic reduction in the quasiparticle weight Z. In general, it appears that holes tend to induce one-dimensional-like spin arrangements to improve their mobility. Using ladders it is also shown that the very small $J/t\ensuremath{\sim}0.1$ regime of the standard $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model may be more realistic than anticipated in previous investigations, since such regime shares several properties with those found in the extended model at realistic couplings. Another goal of the present paper is to provide additional information on the recently discussed tendencies to stripe formation and spin incommensurability reported for the extended $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model. These tendencies are illustrated with several examples.
