Abstract

We have used the theory presented by us in a recent paper to analyze a 1967 level-crossing experiment on the 2 $^{3}P$ state of $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ performed at the University of Michigan. Until now a consistent analysis of the experiment had not been possible because of inadequate development of the theory. The present analysis gives excellent agreement with the results of an atomic beam magnetic resonance experiment performed recently by us at Yale University. In fact we have used the combined data to give slightly improved results for four of the 11 relevant parameters. These four are the spin-antisymmetric contact hyperfine interaction constant [C'=-4327(69) MHz)], the 2 $^{3}P$ dipole hyperfine interaction constant [D=-28.145(21) MHz], the 2 $^{3}P$ tensor hyperfine interaction constant [E=-7.1353(38) MHz], and the orbital g factor [${g}_{L}$=0.999 828 6(20)]. .AE

A `Level Crossing' Experiment in Mercury

John N. Dodd

A change of the intensity of resonance fluorescence may take place when Zeeman states of the excited level have the same energy. The fields at which these `level crossings' occur in 199 Hg and 201 Hg have been measured. Combined with recent determinations of the hyperfine coupling constants, the results yield values for g J of the 3 P 1 states: g J (199)=1.48634±0.00005, g J (201)=1.48606±0.00015.

Precision spectroscopy of a trapped $^{173}$Yb$^+$ ion using a bath of ultracold atoms

Egor Kovlakov, Rene Gerritsma

We demonstrate precision laser spectroscopy of a trapped $^{173}$Yb$^+$ ion that is not directly laser cooled by coupling it to ultracold atoms. The atomic bath continuously cools the internal degrees of freedom of the ion to its hyperfine ground state via spin-exchange collisions. Successful laser excitation is detected via state-selective charge transfer and subsequent ion loss. We probe the $6^2S_{1/2}\rightarrow 6^2P_{3/2}$ transition at 329 nm and measure the magnetic and electric hyperfine interaction constants for the $6^2P_{3/2}$ state to be $A=-241(1)$ MHz and $B=1460(8)$ MHz, respectively. Our results are in agreement with a previous measurement obtained in a hollow-cathode discharge experiment but are a factor of 6-9 more precise. The techniques demonstrated in this work may be extended to perform precision spectroscopy on other ions with complex level structures.

Observation of Level Crossing in H, n=2

R. T. Robiscoe

We have observed the crossing of the atomic hydrogen levels ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{B}(2{S}_{\frac{1}{2}}, {m}_{J}=\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{2}, {m}_{I}=\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{2})$ and ${e}_{B}(2{P}_{\frac{1}{2}}, {m}_{J}=+\frac{1}{2}, {m}_{I}=\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{2})$ near 605 G. A new atomic-beam method is used. H atoms are excited to the metastable $2S$ state by electron bombardment. The $2S({m}_{J}=\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{2})$ state is quenched in the bombardment region. The $2S({m}_{J}=+\frac{1}{2})$ beam passes through a zero-field region where $\frac{1}{3}$ of it is converted to the single hyperfine level ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{B}$. The ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{B}$ atoms enter a uniform magnetic field parallel to the beam. With no externally applied electric field, 92% of them reach the detector. When we apply an electrostatic field of about 0.7 V/cm perpendicular to the beam, the ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{B}$ atoms are strongly quenched near the ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{B}\ensuremath{-}{e}_{B}$ crossing point. Observed quenching agrees with the Bethe-Lamb theory of the $2S$ lifetime in external fields. We measure magnetic field by the nuclear magnetic resonance frequency of protons in water. Natural asymmetry and minor experimental corrections reduce the observed center of the ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{B}\ensuremath{-}{e}_{B}$ quenching resonance by 1 part in ${10}^{4}$. The corrected ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{B}\ensuremath{-}{e}_{B}$ crossing occurs at 2577.57\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.25 kc/sec, proton nmr in water. From this, we calculate the Lamb shift $\mathcal{S}$ in H, $n=2$. With a diamagnetic shielding correction, and the accurately known $2S$ hyperfine interval, we get $\mathcal{S}=1058.07\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.10$ Mc/sec. This disagrees with $\mathcal{S}=1057.77\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.10$ Mc/sec from the Lamb experiments.

Hyperfine Interaction, Zeeman and Stark Effects for Excited States in Rubidium

G Belin, Lennarth Holmgren, Sune R. Svanberg

Highly excitedPandDstates in87Rb were examined using a two-step excitation procedure. A conventional rf lamp and a CW dye laser were used for the first and second step, respectively. The following results for the magnetic dipole interaction constanta, the electric quadrupole interaction constantb, the LandégJfactor, and the tensor polarizability α2were obtained in level-crossing and optical-double-resonance experiments: 92P3/2:a= 4.05(3) MHz,b=0.55(3) MHz,gJ= 1.3335(15) 102P3/2:a= 2.60(8) MHz,gJ= 1.3332(20) 82D3/2:a= 2.840(15) MHz,b= 0.17(2) MHz 82D5/2:a= -1.20(15) MHz,gJ= 1.1998(15) 92D3/2:a= 1.900(10) MHz,b= 0.11(3) MHz 92D5/2:a= (-)0.80(15) MHz,gJ= 1.1995(15), α2= 180.3(9.0) MHz/(kV/cm)2 Many-body calculations of the hyperfine structure of Rb have been performed. The polarization effect is included to all orders, whereas the correlation effect is omitted. The negativeafactors for the2D5/2states, indicating large perturbations, are explained by the polarization contribution. A review of experimental hyperfine interaction constants, LandégJfactors and tensor polarizabilities for rubidium is given together with theoretical values of theafactors. The quadrupole moment for87Rb is obtained from thebfactors for the2P3/2and2D3/2states, using quadrupole parameters from the many-body calculations. The correlation effect is included in a semi-empirical way.
