Abstract

We calculate the two-dimensional probability for the magnetization in a two-dimensional XY model of finite size. We show that, for arbitrarily large N, there is a topological difference between the distributions in the low-temperature spin wave regime and in the high-temperature paramagnetic regime. In the low-temperature phase is a well-defined ring function and we calculate an upper bound for . Even so, this is consistent with the susceptibility per spin, , being divergent. We show further that the distribution function Q(M) for the scalar magnetization has a universal form, scaling with the single variable , where L is the system size and J is the coupling constant. We show that has considerable structure, with two terms of order N, one due to the spin waves and the other due to vortices. This leads to a peak in at the Kosterlitz - Thouless - Berezinskii transition.

Universal magnetic fluctuations in the two-dimensional XY model

P. Archambault, S. T. Bramwell, Jean-Yves Fortin +3 more

We discuss the probability distribution function for the magnetic order parameter M, in the low temperature phase of the two-dimensional XY model. In this phase the system is critical over the whole range of temperature. The thermally averaged value of the order parameter 〈M〉, which is zero in the thermodynamic limit, has abnormally large finite size corrections. An exact result, within a spin wave calculation gives 〈M〉=(1/2N)T/8πJ, where J is the magnetic exchange constant and N the number of spins. We show, using Monte Carlo simulation, that the distribution function, Q(y−〈y〉), y=T−1LT/4πJM, is an asymmetric universal function. Using a diagramatic technique, we show that the asymmetry comes from three-spin and higher correlations. If only two-spin correlations are considered, the distribution is Gaussian. However, as there are contributions from two-spin terms separated by all distances, the distribution remains broad and is consistent with a divergent susceptibility.

Magnetization: A characteristic of the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii transition

S. T. Bramwell, P. C. W. Holdsworth

In the low-temperature phase of the two-dimensional XY model, spin-spin correlations decay so slowly with distance that the thermodynamic limit is inaccessible. As a result the Mermin-Wagner theorem is inapplicable to any realizable system, and all have a measurable finite-size magnetization. We show that there is a regime of universal behavior near to the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii transition. In experiments, the regime is identified by a magnetization exponent \ensuremath{\beta}=0.23, which we have calculated by a renormalization-group analysis. Monte Carlo simulations of an harmonic XY model clearly locate the boundaries of the universal regime, and identify it with vortex renormalization.

Percolation of the two-dimensional XY model in the flow representation

Bao‐Zong Wang, Pengcheng Hou, Chun-Jiong Huang +1 more

We simulate the two-dimensional XY model in the flow representation by a worm-type algorithm, up to linear system size L=4096, and study the geometric properties of the flow configurations. As the coupling strength K increases, we observe that the system undergoes a percolation transition K_{perc} from a disordered phase consisting of small clusters into an ordered phase containing a giant percolating cluster. Namely, in the low-temperature phase, there exhibits a long-ranged order regarding the flow connectivity, in contrast to the quasi-long-range order associated with spin properties. Near K_{perc}, the scaling behavior of geometric observables is well described by the standard finite-size scaling ansatz for a second-order phase transition. The estimated percolation threshold K_{perc}=1.1053(4) is close to but obviously smaller than the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition point K_{BKT}=1.1193(10), which is determined from the magnetic susceptibility and the superfluid density. Various interesting questions arise from these unconventional observations, and their solutions would shed light on a variety of classical and quantum systems of BKT phase transitions.

Correlation decay in low-dimensional spin glasses

ARMEN N. KOCHARIAN, A. Sogomonian

A new method to investigate the two-point correlation function decay in a finite size random spin system and at finite temperatures is proposed. It is applicable to systems with cyclic boundary conditions and in any local or uniform magnetic field. The efficiency of this method is presented in the case of an isotropic XY spin glass model with Gaussian bond distribution in external field. Using unitary U(1) gauge transformation and operator inequalities we have obtained explicit upper bounds for generalized spin-glass susceptibility κ(T,R) that describes off-diagonal transverse magnetization in two dimensional random XY spin lattices at finite temperatures. It is found that the slowest possible decay for susceptibility in random XY spin glass is of the Kosterlitz–Thouless-type with power-law decay in 2D, and the exponential type in 1D, at low temperatures. These upper bounds rule out the possibility of the corresponding magnetic ordering in 1D and 2D isotropic XY spin glasses at finite temperatures.

Analysis of the low-temperature phase in the two-dimensional long-range diluted XY model

Cescatti Fabiana, Miguel Ibáñez-Berganza, A. Vezzani +1 more

The critical behavior of statistical models with long-range interactions exhibits distinct regimes as a function of $\ensuremath{\rho}$, the power of the interaction strength decay. For large enough $\ensuremath{\rho}, \ensuremath{\rho}>{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\mathrm{sr}}$, the critical behavior is observed to coincide with that of the short-range model. However, there are controversial aspects regarding this picture, one of which is the value of the short-range threshold ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\mathrm{sr}}$ in the case of the long-range XY model in two dimensions. We study the 2D XY model on the diluted graph, a sparse graph obtained from the 2D lattice by rewiring links with probability decaying with the Euclidean distance of the lattice as ${|r|}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\rho}}$, which is expected to feature the same critical behavior of the long-range model. Through Monte Carlo sampling and finite-size analysis of the spontaneous magnetization and of the Binder cumulant, we present numerical evidence that ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\mathrm{sr}}=4$. According to such a result, one expects the model to belong to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class for $\ensuremath{\rho}\ensuremath{\ge}4$, and to present a second-order transition for $\ensuremath{\rho}<4$.

Temperature-dependent fluctuations in the two-dimensionalXYmodel

Simon T. Banks, S. T. Bramwell

We present a detailed investigation of the probability density function (PDF) of order parameter fluctuations in the finite two-dimensional XY (2d XY ) model. In the low-temperature critical phase of this model, the PDF approaches a universal non-Gaussian limit distribution in the limit T → 0. Our analysis resolves the question of temperature dependence of the PDF in this regime, for which conflicting results have been reported. We show analytically that a weak temperature dependence results from the inclusion of multiple loop graphs in a previously derived graphical expansion. This is confirmed by numerical simulations on two controlled approximations to the 2d XY model: the harmonic and ‘harmonic XY ’ models. The harmonic model has no Kosterlitz–Thouless–Berezinskiĭ (KTB) transition and the PDF becomes progressively less skewed with increasing temperature until it closely approximates a Gaussian function above T ≈ 4π. Near to that temperature, we find some evidence of a phase transition, although our observations appear to exclude a thermodynamic singularity.
