The localisation transition in a dissipative two-state system: a squeezed state approach

Abstract

A displaced squeezed state is used as the variational ground state of a spin-boson Hamiltonian describing the interaction of a two-state system with a phonon bath. The phase diagram for localisation in the ohmic dissipation is obtained by a method based on the self-consistent calculation of the effective tunnelling splitting. A comparison with the results of the usual displaced state approximation and the renormalisation group theory is also given.

Symmetry-breaking transition in a two-level system coupled to an Ohmic bath: A squeezed-state approach

Biswadeb Dutta, A. M. Jayannavar

Displaced squeezed states are proposed as variational ground states for phonons (Bose fields) coupled to two-level systems (spin systems). We have investigated the zero-temperature phase diagram for the localization-delocalization transition of a tunneling particle interacting with an Ohmic heat bath. Our results are compared with known existing approximate treatments. A modified phase diagram using the displaced squeezed state is presented.

LOCALIZATION-DISLOCALIZATION TRANSITION IN DISSIP-ATIVE QUANTUM TUNNELING SYSTEMS

Y Hang

Based on the renormalization effect of the phonon ground state on the tunneling parameters, a new method is proposed to investigate the localization-dislocalization transition of a tunneling system with bosonic bath. Our study shows the previous theories are in principle built on the displaced phonon state approximation, while our method may be used to examine the effects of other type of phonon ground states (such as squeezed phonon state) on the localization-dislocalization transition.

Variational approach for tunneling diffusion of a particle interacting with phonons

Guangming Zhang, Hong Chen, Xiang Xia Wu

Displaced-squeezed states are proposed as the variational ground states of phonons coupled with a particle moving in a tight-binding band. The narrowing effect of the phonon overlapping integral on the renormalized bandwidth of the tunneling particle is investigated. We find that, for Ohmic dissipation, the conditions for the localization-delocalization transition of the tunneling particle are modified compared with the previous studies.

Universality of dissipative two-state systems

Hong Chen, Lu Yu

The static properties of a dissipative two-state system are studied by perturbation, mapping to the quantum sine-Gordon model, and a variational approach. We find that its properties at zero temperature depend not only on the spectral density J(\ensuremath{\omega})\ensuremath{\sim}${\mathit{tsum}}_{\mathit{l}}$${\mathit{g}}_{\mathit{l}}^{2}$\ensuremath{\delta}(\ensuremath{\omega}-${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{\mathit{l}}$), but also on the explicit form of the coupling strength ${\mathit{g}}_{\mathit{l}}$\ensuremath{\sim}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{\mathit{l}}^{\ensuremath{\lambda}}$ (${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{\mathit{l}}$ is the phonon frequency). For weak coupling (\ensuremath{\lambda}\ensuremath{\ge}1), the effect of displacement of the phonon state is dominant; while for strong couplings (\ensuremath{\lambda}1), one must take account of both displacement and deformation. Displaced squeezed states are proposed as ground states of the bath under strong coupling, and we show that the localization transition of the Ohmic dissipation occurs at ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}_{\mathit{c}}$=3-2\ensuremath{\lambda} instead of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}_{\mathit{c}}$=1 as for the weak-coupling case.

Variational study of dissipative two-state systems

Yunlong Shi, Hong Chen, Xiang Xia Wu

Two variational states, the displaced state and the displaced-squeezed state, are compared for a two-state system with super-Ohmic dissipation, and their dependence on the form of the coupling strength ${\mathit{g}}_{\mathit{l}}$\ensuremath{\sim}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{\mathit{l}}^{\ensuremath{\lambda}}$ (${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{\mathit{l}}$ is the phonon frequency) is analyzed. We find that, in the strong-coupling region, the displaced-squeezed state is more stable and the ground-state properties depend not only on the spectral density but also on the index \ensuremath{\lambda}. Moreover, we find that the stable area of the displaced-squeezed state increases as \ensuremath{\lambda} decreases.
