Abstract

We report an exactly solvable theory of ’’time-reversed’’ phase-front generation including depletion effects and nonlinear phase distortion. Simple expressions are obtained for peak reflected signals with and without input probe signals.

Optical pulse integration and chirp reversal in degenerate four-wave mixing

John H. Marburger

A simple theory shows that phase modulation on a pulse may be reversed in time (e.g., positive chirp to negative) by degenerate four-wave mixing in an optically thin nonlinear medium. In thick media, the reflected pulse field is not truly time reversed, but is proportional to the time integral of the conjugate incident field.

Amplified reflection, phase conjugation, and oscillation in degenerate four-wave mixing

Amnon Yariv, David M. Pepper

A number of new optical effects that result from degenerate four-wave mixing in transparent optical media are proposed and analyzed. The applications are relevant to time-reversed (phase-conjugated) propagation as well as to a new mode of parametric oscillation.

Transient analysis of nearly degenerate four-wave mixing

W. W. Rigrod, Robert A. Fisher, B. J. Feldman

Exact solutions for the impulse responses of the phase-conjugate backward wave and of the transmitted forward wave in a nonlinear four-wave mixing medium with a cw undepleted pump are derived from an earlier analysis of active contraflow systems by Bobroff and Haus [J. Appl. Phys. 38, 390 (1967)].

Nonlinear phase distortion in phase conjugation by degenerate four-wave mixing in Kerr media

S. Trillo, Stefan W. Wabnitz

We derive an exact solution for both amplitude and phase of a signal that is back-reflected by collinear nonlinear degenerate mixing of four circularly polarized waves of arbitrary intensity in a Kerr-like medium. Our analysis suggests that taking pump depletion into account may spoil the ideal phase-conjugation condition, even in the limit of weak nonlinear coupling, and indicates that substantial deterioration of the probe phase-reversal property may occur for strongly interacting waves in a manner that is highly sensitive to the anisotropy of the nonlinear susceptibility.

Optical multistability and phase conjugation fidelity in a high-birefringence optical fiber

S. Trillo, Stefan W. Wabnitz

We derive an exact solution including pump depletion of collinear four-wave mixing in a birefringent Kerr medium. We find mirrorless optical multistability for a linearly polarized backscattered signal with orthogonal pumps at cw power levels using a few meters of polarization-maintaining silica fiber. An expression for the nonlinear phase distortion of ideal phase conjugation is obtained, showing a fundamental limitation to generating time-reversed wave fronts using Kerr nonlinearity.
