Squeezed light generated by a microcavity laser

Abstract

Photon-number fluctuations 1.3 dB below the semiclassical shot-noise limit are observed in the output of a semiconductor microcavity laser. Although the laser oscillates in a single longitudinal mode, photon-number squeezed light is realized through nonclassical correlations between two orthogonally polarized, transverse laser modes.

Generation of intensity squeezed light with VCSELs: theory and experiment

Wolfgang E. Elsaesser, Jean-Luc C. Vey, Karsten Auen +1 more

We present comprehensive investigations on the polarization resolved quantum noise behavior of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) with various cavity designs. These experiments are accompanied by detailed studies using a semiclassical approach, first, to calculate and model theoretically the amplitude fluctuations and correlations of a two orthogonal polarization-mode semiconductor laser as realized by a VCSEL, and second, to explore theoretically the squeezing potential of VCSELs. First, we find that the possible amount of squeezing with VCSELs should be superior as compared to edge emitting lasers for ideal single mode operation and under comparable pumping conditions. Second, we demonstrate that there exists the possibility of squeezing also in the two-mode regime besides sub-shot noise emission in the well known ideal single-mode operation regime configuring the recently published first experimental demonstration of the generation of amplitude squeezed light with VCSELs. Third, we demonstrate for the first time the generation of amplitude squeezed light by a lateral and polarization single mode VCSEL with the achievement of a maximum squeezing of 0.9 dB. Finally the future trends, the applications and the limitations of these non-classical states of light with respect to metrology applications are discussed.

Nonclassical number-phase correlation in semiconductor lasers

Buchanan J. Rouse, Daniel C. Kilper

Summary form only given. Optical phase is conjugate to the photon-number in quantum optics and therefore is important for nonclassical states in which the photon-number operator is reduced below the semiclassical shot noise limit, i.e., for photon-number squeezed states. Nonclassical emission from semiconductor lasers has the added facet that excess phase fluctuations are correlated with fluctuations in the photon-number through the nonlinear gain, and this correlation extends below shot noise. In this experiment, quantum-limited number-phase correlations are examined using an external-cavity semiconductor laser with heavily suppressed (>40 dB) side modes and near ideal single-mode laser characteristics. A feedforward gain matching condition is found to limit the observation of a strong nonclassical effect.

Photon-number squeezed light generated by semiconductor lasers: Applications and quantum noise processes.

Daniel C. Kilper

In this dissertation measurements are presented that extend our understanding of the important noise processes involved in the semiconductor laser generation of photon-number squeezed light. Strong sub-shot noise correlations between photon-number fluctuations on orthogonal polarization axes are observed in the output of a low temperature injection-locked quantum-well laser. Such polarization dependent effects are accounted for by intrinsic correlations generated in the laser gain medium and polarization mixing due to birefringence. Using polarization preserving balanced homodyne detection, up to 4.5 dB of photon-number squeezing is reported, which is within 95% of the expected maximum squeezing based on the device quantum efficiency. The work in this dissertation demonstrates the application of such nonclassical fields to practical measurements that achieve sub-shot noise sensitivity. Coherent nonlinear optical spectroscopy with a photon-number squeezed probe field is used to measure the Urbach tail and exciton resonances in a GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum well with sensitivity below the semiclassical shot-noise limit. Direct drive current modulation of an injection-locked room temperature laser results in a nonclassical amplitude modulated field with a signal to noise ratio that exceeds the maximum ratio permitted for a classical source under equivalent modulation conditions.

Noise and amplitude-squeezing performance of two-polarization-mode semiconductor lasers

Jean-Luc C. Vey, Wolfgang Elsäßer

Using a theoretical semiclassical approach, we study in detail the amplitude fluctuations and correlations of a two-orthogonal polarization-mode semiconductor laser as obtained from a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). We demonstrate that there exists the possibility of squeezing in the two-mode regime besides sub-shot-noise emission in the well-known ideal single-mode operation regime. These theoretical results confirm a recent experimental demonstration of the generation of amplitude-squeezed light with VCSEL's.

Generation of amplitude-squeezed light from a room-temperature Fabry–Perot semiconductor laser

John E. Kitching, Daniele Battesimo Provenzano, Avigail Yariv

Amplitude-squeezed light with intensity fluctuations 29% below the standard quantum limit (SQL) is produced from a pump-suppressed room-temperature semiconductor laser, corresponding to 41% below the SQL after correction for detection efficiency. Excess noise, which degrades the observed squeezing, appears to be associated with the presence of weak longitudinal side modes.

Amplitude-squeezed light from quantum-well lasers

MJ Freeman, Richard R. Craig, Don R. Scifres +2 more

High-impedance pump noise suppression was used to generate amplitude squeezing in an index-guided quantumwell laser. Light exhibiting photon-number noise 1.4 dB below the shot-noise limit was observed, and the corresponding polarization properties were examined. an unsaturated detector revealed 2.9 dB of squeezing.
