Demonstration of optical bistability with a nonlinear frustrated-total-reflection filter

Marc Haelterman, Ch. Waelbroeck

The nonlinear frustrated-total-reflection filter is proposed as a remarkably simple all-optical computing element. Potential advantages of this device over nonlinear prism couplers and nonlinear thin films are presented. Optical bistability is experimentally demonstrated by using a liquid crystal as an optically nonlinear material.

All-Optical Logic Elements For Optical Processing

Brian S. Wherrett, Yuk Tak Chow, David C. Hutchings +2 more

Theoretical and experimental studies aimed at low power all-optical bistability in thermal devices are described. Cavities containing semiconductors, liquid crystals and liquids have been investigated. Submilliwatt and laser-diode-induced switching is reported for metal cavities containing strongly thermo-optic liquid crystal material. Aspects of switching dynamics are described.

Microwatt optical switching and bistability in dyed nematic liquid crystals

Ashley Lloyd, Chang H. Wang, Brian S. Wherrett

The performance of optically bistable liquid crystal interference filters with extra-cavity metallic absorbers is contrasted with designs using intra-cavity dyes with which switching levels at 4 pW are recorded. The use of these devices in parallel processing applications is also considered, with the optical implementation of a "flip-flop" and results of a 15 x 15 element array switching presented.
