Abstract

Nuclear γ-ray-resonant superradiance is discussed, comparing Dicke's original approach 1 Dicke, RH. 1954. Phys. Rev., 93: 99–110. Phase-matched emission from an optically thin medium following one-photon pulse excitation: Energy considerations

P. R. Berman, J.-L. Le Gouët

Scully and coworkers [M. O. Scully, E. S. Fry, C. H. R. Oii, and K. W\'odkiewicz, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 010501 (2006)] demonstrated that there is directional, phase-matched emission following the excitation of an ensemble of atoms by a single-photon pulse. While the phase-matched emission intensity is proportional to the the number of atoms, for optically thin samples the total energy emitted in the phase-matched direction is much less than that radiated in other directions. Moreover, even for optically thin samples, it is necessary to take into account effects related to cooperative decay if energy is to be conserved in the overall emission process. An analytic calculation is presented to show explicitly how cooperative decay reduces the incoherent emission and restores energy conservation in this low-density limit.

Multibeam Borrmann modes and crystallineγ-ray lasers

J. T. Hutton, J. P. Hannon, G. T. Trammell

We have previously shown that two-beam Borrmann modes of good single M\"ossbauer crystals offer the possibility of achieving nuclear lasing at population-inversion densities substantially lower than would be required in an amorphous sample of the same material [J. T. Hutton, J. P. Hannon, and G. T. Trammell, Phys. Rev. A 37, 4269 (1988)]. In this paper we discuss the further improvements which are obtained in multibeam Borrmann modes (which consist of the coherent superposition of three or more plane waves within the crystal). These modes can have smaller absorption coefficients, and more importantly, stronger coupling to the nuclei, as well as sharper collimation than do corresponding two-beam modes, leading to even lower requirements for the population-inversion density needed to induce lasing.

Propagation of a laser pulse in a three-level cascade atomic medium under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency

Minh Dong Hoang, Van Doai Le, Ngoc Sau Vu +2 more

We study the propagation dynamics of a single pair of probe and coupling laser pulses in a three-level cascade atomic medium by numerical solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations for atoms and fields. Influences of the pulse durations, intensity and pulse area of the coupling laser on the probe laser propagation are investigated. We found the conditions that the undistorted probe pulse in such i.e., the effect is established. Under conditions, the ground state population is trapped in a dark state.
