Abstract

ABSTRACT Physical layer security has recently attracted considerable attention in the context of information‐theoretic point of view. In this paper, we investigate relay selection schemes for security‐constrained half‐duplex cooperative wireless networks with multiple eavesdroppers, which have the ability to cooperate to overhear the source transmission. The proposed techniques select a trusted decode‐and‐forward relay to assist the source transmission and maximize the achievable secure rate for different eavesdropper policies (cooperation or not); for the two cases, we assume that the channel is always available. In addition, a jamming method that selects two relay nodes to create an intentional interference at both phases of the decode‐and‐forward protocol to confound the eavesdropper nodes is also considered. Both the source–destination and source–eavesdroppers links are taken into account in the proposed analysis. Secrecy rate and secrecy outage probability are the two performance metrics that are used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed schemes while asymptotic approximations of the secrecy outage probability are also derived. Simulation and analytical results demonstrate the performance improvement of the proposed schemes. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Improving physical layer security in two-way cooperative networks with multiple eavesdroppers

Doaa H. Ibrahim, Emad S. Hassan, Sami A. El‐Dolil

In this paper, three different relay and jammers selection schemes are presented to improve the physical layer security of two-way cooperative networks in the presence of multiple cooperating and non-cooperating eavesdroppers. The presented selection schemes are; optimal selection scheme without jamming, optimal selection scheme with conventional jamming, and optimal selection scheme with controlled jamming. The proposed schemes select three intermediate nodes during two communication phases. In the first phase, a friendly jammer is selected to create intentional interference at the eavesdroppers' nodes. In the second phase, two relay nodes are selected; one node is selected to operate as a conventional relay and assists the sources to deliver their data to the corresponding destinations via a Decode-and-Forward (DF) strategy. While the other node behaves as a jammer node in order to confuse the eavesdroppers in this phase. The proposed schemes are analyzed in terms of ergodic secrecy rate and secrecy outage probability. The obtained results show that the jamming schemes outperform the non-jamming schemes in the eavesdroppers' environment. Moreover, cooperating eavesdroppers' further degrade system's secrecy performance than the non-cooperating ones. Finally, a comparison between relay and jammers selection schemes in both one-way and two-way cooperative networks is given in terms of both ergodic secrecy rate and secrecy outage probability metrics.

Optimal Relay Selection with a Full-Duplex Active Eavesdropper in Cooperative Wireless Networks

He Zhou, Dongxuan He, Hua Wang +1 more

In this paper, we investigate the physical layer security of a dual-hop cooperative network in the presence of a full-duplex active eavesdropper, which can overhear the confidential signals and transmit jamming signals simultaneously. We utilize the optimal relay selection scheme to improve the secrecy performance, where the relay maximizing the secrecy capacity will be selected to forward the information. To evaluate the secrecy performance of our system, we derive a compact closed-form expression of the secrecy outage probability. Besides, we also analyze the asymptotic performance related to the position of the nodes. Finally, we verify our analysis through the numerical results, and demonstrate that there exists a secrecy protection region where the secrecy outage probability is below a target probability.

Secrecy Analysis on Half-Duplex Two-Way Relay Transmission Using Various Transmission Channels and Jamming Strategies

Mohammed Ahmed Salem, Azlan Bin Abd.Aziz, Mohamad Yusoff Alias +2 more

The open nature of the wireless networks makes them vulnerable to the eavesdropper attacks. Cooperative relay transmission is a popular method to prevent the attacks of the illegal nodes. This research proposes a cooperative jamming protocol to enhance the physical layer in wireless cooperative networks, where the destination sends a jamming signal to the eavesdropper node to degrade its channel capacity. Simulations of the secrecy performance metrics in terms of the secrecy capacity and secrecy outage probability are presented and discussed to measure the security level of the proposed jamming protocol. In this paper, different channels namely Rician fading, Rayleigh fading, and Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channels are investigated in the half-duplex two-way relaying system to obtain the maximum secrecy performance. Based on the results, the highest secrecy capacity is achieved by using the Rician fading channel for transmission from the source to the destination and using the Rayleigh channel as the jamming link to degrade the eavesdropper capacity.

Secrecy Performance on Half-Duplex Two-Way Multi-Relay Transmission Technique Under Wireless Physical Layer Security

Mohammed Ahmed Salem, Azlan Abd Aziz, Mohamad Yusoff Alias +1 more

The open broadcast nature of the wireless networks makes it vulnerable to the eavesdropper attacks. The physical layer security (PLS) is a grown research field that exploits the characteristics of the physical wireless channel to prevent the eavesdropper interruptions and attacks. The use of the cooperative relay transmission is a method to approach the physical layer security. This paper studies the secrecy performance metrics of the half-duplex two-way multi-relaying technique. A cooperative jamming protocol is proposed to enhance the physical layer security, where the destination sends jamming signals to the eavesdropper node to degrade its channel capacity. However, the relays can act as a jammer and send jamming signals to the eavesdropper node. Moreover, Simulations of the performance metrics namely the secrecy capacity (Cs) and the secrecy outage probability (SOP) applied on the technique are presented and discussed to measure the secrecy level of the proposed technique compared with an existing technique namely half-duplex one-way multi-relaying technique. Based on simulations and discussions the proposed technique outperforms the existing technique in term of secrecy performance.

Destination Assisted Cooperative Jamming for Wireless Physical-Layer Security

Yupeng Liu, Jiangyuan Li, Athina P. Petropulu

A wireless network with one source, one destination, one eavesdropper, and multiple decode-and-forward relays is considered. A two-slot cooperative relaying scheme is proposed that targets at maximizing the secrecy rate. In the first slot, the source transmits the information bearing signal, and at the same time, it cooperates with the destination in jamming the eavesdropper without creating interference at the relay. In the second slot, one optimally selected relay retransmits the decoded source signal, and at the same time, that particular relay cooperates with the source to jam the eavesdropper without creating interference at the destination. Optimal relay selection and also optimal power allocation among the first/second slot data signal and jamming noise are proposed. It is shown that the secrecy rate of the proposed scheme scales with the total system powerP0and the number of available relaysKaccording to 1/2log2(1 +P0/8logK) - 1.6 bits/channel use . Although the proposed power allocation and relay selection assume global CSI available, the performance under imperfect relay CSI is also investigated. Also, the performance under distributed relay selection with limited feedback is demonstrated.
