Abstract

We report a new transmission that can be used for quantum key distribution. The system uses single-sideband-modulated light in an implementation of the BB84 quantum cryptography protocol. The system is formed by two integrated unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometers and is based on interference between phase-modulated sidebands in the spectral domain. Experiments show that high interference visibility can be obtained.

We report single-photon interference in modulation sidebands produced by a pair of electro-optic integrated Mach-Zehnder interferometers operating in single-sideband mode. The modulation and detection scheme employed makes possible the use of the BB84 four-state protocol for quantum cryptographic key distribution. Experiments were carried out at 1550 nm, over a 20-km-long standard single-mode fiber.

Summary form only given. We propose a new approach, based on a single side band (SSB) detection scheme, that allows the BB84 protocol to be used in a robust scheme for quantum cryptography and eliminates both polarization and path-delay maintenance problems. An unbalanced integrated Mach Zehnder modulator modulates the intensity of the reference beam.

Phase-modulation transmission system for quantum cryptography

Jean-Marc Mérolla, Yuri T. Mazurenko, J.-P. Goedgebuer +2 more

We describe a new method for quantum key distribution that utilizes phase modulation of sidebands of modulation by use of integrated electro-optic modulators at the transmitting and receiving modules. The system is shown to produce constructive or destructive interference with unity visibility, which should allow quantum cryptography to be carried out with high flexibility by use of conventional devices.

We report a particular implementation of a quantum cryptographic device operating at 1540 nm wavelength and involving interference between phase-modulated sidebands produced by a pair of phase modulators in the transmitting and receiving modules. The principle of operation is described in terms of both classical and quantum optics. The method has been demonstrated experimentally using a strong- attenuated semiconductor laser diode. Single photon interference has been obtained with a fringe visibility greater than 90%, including that the system can be used for quantum key distribution.

Single-Photon Interference in Sidebands of Phase-Modulated Light for Quantum Cryptography

Jean-Marc Mérolla, Yuri T. Mazurenko, J.-P. Goedgebuer +1 more

We report single-photon interference in the sidebands of modulated light. The relative phase of interacting quantum states is reliably controlled by the phase of a low-frequency modulating signal. We show how this type of interference can be used to build a robust system for quantum cryptography. An experiment was implemented at 1540 nm, over a 20-km-long standard single-mode fiber, using a germanium singlephoton avalanche photodiode.

We have demonstrated single-photon interference over 150 km using time-division interferometers for quantum cryptography, which were composed of two integrated-optic asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometers, and balanced gated-mode photon detectors. The observed fringe visibility was more than 80% after 150 km transmission.
