Abstract

The specific heat and the phase diagram of the Ising square lattice with nearest- (J 1 ) and next-nearest-neighbour (J 2 ) interactions are studied within the cluster variation method. The Ising Hamiltonian is solved in the square (Wannier-Kramer) approximation. The phase diagram is calculated and compared with other previous studies.

First-order phase transitions in the Ising square lattice with first- and second-neighbor interactions

José Luis Morán-López, F. Aguilera‐Granja, J. M. Sánchez

The phase diagram of the Ising square lattice with first- and second-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions (${\mathit{J}}_{1}$ and ${\mathit{J}}_{2}$) is calculated within the framework of the cluster-variation method. The Hamiltonian is solved within the nine-point-cluster approximation. In contrast to previous studies we find that the phase transition from the superantiferromagnetic to the paramagnetic state is of first order in the range 0.5R=${\mathit{J}}_{1}$/${\mathit{J}}_{2}$1.144. The non-Ising critical behavior observed in that range of interactions might be due to that phenomenon.

Phase diagram of the Ising square lattice with competing interactions

Ansgar Kalz, A. Honecker, Sebastian Fuchs +1 more

We restudy the phase diagram of the 2D-Ising model with competing interactions J1 on nearest neighbour and J2 on next-nearest neighbour bonds via Monte-Carlo simulations. We present the finite temperature phase diagram and introduce computational methods which allow us to calculate transition temperatures close to the criticalpoint at J2 = J1/2. Further on we investigate the character of the different phase boundariesand find that the transition is weakly first order formoderate J2 > J1/2.

Phase diagram and critical exponent ν for the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interaction Ising model

James L. Monroe, Seung‐Yeon Kim

We obtain an approximation of the phase diagram of an Ising model with both nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interactions on the square lattice. We use the Fisher zeros of the partition functions of a sequence of finite-sized systems along with various extrapolation methods to obtain phase transition points. In addition, we obtain an approximate value of the correlation length critical exponent nu. Our results are compared to previous results for this system using a wide variety of other approaches.

Spin-One Ising Model with Nearest-Neighbour and Next-Nearest-Neighbour Interactions

Motoyuki Tanaka, Takeshi Kawabe

Phase transitions of the spin-one Ising model with nearest-neighbour and next-nearest-neighbour interactions are investigated for a square lattice using a molecular-field theory and a Monte Carlo method. Special attention is paid to the effects of the biquadratic next-nearest-neighbour interaction on the phase transitions of the model. Phase diagrams characterizing types of phase transition are obtained for several values of the coupling constants. The existence of the multi-critical points and the successive phase transitions are also discussed in connection with these phase diagrams.

Cluster variation approach to the Ising square lattice with two- and four-spin interactions

Carla Buzano, Marco Pretti

The phase diagram of the Ising square ferromagnet with nearest-neighbor, next-nearest-neighbor, and four-spin (plaquette) interactions is investigated using the cluster variation method in the square approximation. A complete analysis in temperature is performed for the ferromagnetic, superantiferromagnetic, and frustrated region of the ground state. Particular attention is devoted to the role of the four-spin interaction. The most remarkable effect is the occurrence, in several regions of the interaction parameter space, of first-order transitions and sometimes reentrance phenomena. Critical and tricritical points are almost analytically determined.

Monte Carlo studies of the Ising square lattice with competing interactions

Ansgar Kalz, A. Honecker, Sebastian Fuchs +1 more

Abstract. We use improved Monte-Carlo algorithms to study the antiferromagnetic 2D-Ising model with competing interactions J1 on nearest neighbour and J2 on next-nearest neighbour bonds. The finite-temperature phase diagram is divided by a critical point at J2 = J1/2 where the groundstate is highly degenerate. To analyse the phase boundaries we look at the specific heat and the energy distribution for various ratios of J2/J1. We find a first order transition for small J2> J1/2 and the transition temperature suppressed to TC = 0 at the critical point. 1.
