Noise in strong radiation–matter interactions: an experimental study with phase-telegraph noise

Abstract

We report on an experimental study of strong radiation–matter interactions between a phase-telegraph field and an inhomogeneous S = 1/2 two-level system. The phase-telegraph field is obtained by performing a stochastic phase modulation to control the statistical properties of the radiation field. We detect the average time evolution of the system, and we study the dependence of the effective Rabi frequency on the parameters characterizing the stochastic evolution of the radiation field. Experimental results are in good agreement with a theoretical picture of this process given by Eberly et al. [ Phys. Rev. A30, 2381 ( 1984)].

Experimental study of Rabi oscillations induced by a phase-jump field

R. Boscaino, Rosario N. Mantegna

The nutational regime induced by a stochastic field with phase telegraph noise is experimentally investigated in a two-level system at microwave frequency. Regular oscillations are observed in the average transient response of the system with an effective Rabi frequency whose value depends both on the jump amplitude and on the mean dwell time of the phase noise. Motional-narrowing, weak-damping, and strong-damping regimes are observed on varying the dwell time and the jump amplitude. The experimental results are in fair agreement with theoretical predictions.

Two-photon processes in the presence of phase- or frequency-telegraph noise: Experimental study

R. Boscaino, Rosario N. Mantegna

Stochastic fields with non-Gaussian Markovian phase or frequency jumplike noise are produced at microwave frequency and used to induce two-photon (TP) processes in a S=(1/2 spin system. The influence of the field statistics on the TP-induced second-order response is experimentally investigated in a system with very short relaxation times, in its stationary state and in the weak-field limit. In the case of frequency-telegraph noise the experimental spectra of the nonlinear response are found to reproduce roughly the spectral profiles of the corresponding driving fields but with a larger width. When the telegraph noise modulates the phase of the field, the relationship between input and output spectra depends on the phase-jump amplitude ${\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{0}$. For ${\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{0}$=\ensuremath{\pi}/4 the spectrum of the response is much broader than the input one, whereas it is much narrower for ${\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{0}$=\ensuremath{\pi}/2. The experimental results are interpreted using the calculation of the TP-induced second-order response worked out in the preceding paper [Boscaino and Mantegna, Phys. Rev. A 40, 5 (1989)].

Generalized Jaynes-Cummings model with random telegraph noise

S. V. Lawande, Amitabh Joshi, Q. V. Lawande

The Jaynes-Cummings model of a two-level atom interacting with a single quantized mode of radiation field is generalized to include the effects of stochastic fluctuations in the atom-field coupling. The coupling coefficient is assumed to fluctuate either in phase or in frequency. The fluctuations are modeled by binary random telegraph processes. Invoking the Markovian property of the telegraph noise, we derive in these two cases an equation for the density operator averaged over the distribution of fluctuations. The solution of this equation is used to study the resulting decoherence effects in the dynamical behavior of the atom and the statistical properties of the field.

Random noise taming under phase control: spectral manipulation of an optically pumped atomic magnetometer by random telegraph noise

Xu‐xing Geng, Wangwang Tang, Ao-dong Xie +6 more

Optically pumped atomic magnetometer (OPAM), as a highly sensitive quantum sensor, is often significantly disturbed by low-frequency random noise, which seriously limits its measurement robustness. Motivated by this problem, we systematically studied the influence of various parameters of the statistical field related to random telegraph noise (RTN) on the dynamics and spectral characteristics of the OPAM, both theoretically and experimentally. The investigation revealed that the OPAM output spectrum shows a phase sensitivity similar to that induced by the squeezed vacuum field to the relative phase ϕ between the statistical field and the coherent driving field, and its physical essence originates from the phase-dependent reservoir formed by the statistical field. Specifically, the system spectrum is periodically modulated to ϕ , showing complementary regulation behavior of spectral peak and linewidth: when ϕ =90 ∘ , the system is almost insensitive to the RTN noise parameters, showing good robustness; however, when ϕ =0 ∘ , the system is highly responsive to the RTN parameters, showing obvious spectral broadening effect. Our results not only provide what we believe to be a new phase control strategy for the optimization of the OPAM under the background of low-frequency noise, but also provide theoretical and experimental path for the development of noise spectrum precision measurement and dynamical decoupling technology based on OPAM.

Quantum dephasing dynamics in the presence of asymmetric random telegraph noise

Yanyan 言言 Feng 冯, Jing Ren, Xiang-Ji Cai +1 more

Abstract Random telegraph noise (RTN) has been widely used to describe the environmental effects on open quantum systems. In most cases, it is assumed that the environmental noise described by RTN has symmetric properties. However, in some important physical processes, the asymmetric characteristics of environmental noise play a crucial role in the dynamical evolution of the quantum systems. We theoretically study the dephasing dynamics of a two-level quantum system induced by RTN with asymmetric properties. Within the framework of the stochastic Liouville equation, we derive the exact expression of the decoherence function quantifying the coherence evolution of the quantum system. It is shown that, in contrast to the case of the symmetric RTN, the asymmetric RTN can induce a frequency shift and may lead to non-Markovian behavior in the decoherence dynamics of the quantum system. Furthermore, by adjusting the average transition rate, the transition rate difference, and the transition amplitude difference of the environmental noise, the decoherence dynamics of the quantum system can be effectively modulated.
