Abstract

We present an investigation of Feshbach resonances in positron-sodium scattering system. The momentum space coupled channels optical method including the positronium formation channels has been used. The first three partial-wave resonances below the Na(3p,4s,3d,4p) excitation and the Ps(n=2) formation thresholds are calculated. The Wigner cusp structures are also obtained just at these thresholds.

S-, P- and D-wave resonances in positronium-sodium and positronium-potassium scattering

Sadhan K. Adhikari, Puspajit Mandal

Scattering of positronium (Ps) by sodium and potassium atoms has been investigated employing a three-Ps-state coupled-channel model with Ps(1s, 2s, 2p) states using a time-reversal-symmetric regularized electron-exchange model potential fitted to reproduce accurate theoretical results for PsNa and PsK binding energies. We find a narrow S-wave singlet resonance at 4.58 eV of width 0.002 eV in the Ps-Na system and at 4.77 eV of width 0.003 eV in the Ps-K system. Singlet P-wave resonances in both systems are found at 5.07 eV of width 0.3 eV. Singlet D-wave structures are found at 5.3 eV in both systems. We also report results for elastic and Ps-excitation cross sections for Ps scattering by Na and K.

Feshbach resonances in positron-hydrogen scattering

Richard J. Drachman

Seiler, Oberoi, and Callaway first located resonances in the positron-hydrogen system below the $n=2$ inelastic threshold, using the algebraic close-coupling method without including the open positronium channel. Several other calculations including both open channels have failed to find any resonances. In an attempt to clarify the situation, a calculation has been performed which is an extension of the work of Seiler, Oberoi, and Callaway. A wave function including the $1s$, $2s$, and $2p$ eigenstates of hydrogen and the $\stackrel{-}{1s}$ ground state of positronium was used in a calculation that is a simplification of the usual close-coupling technique and that resembles the optical-potential method. In this approximation it is found that the lowest resonance of Seiler, Oberoi, and Callaway is destroyed by opening the $\stackrel{-}{1s}$ channel. It is concluded that any resonances which may occur in this system must lie closer to the $n=2$ threshold than do the corresponding electron-hydrogen resonances.

Feshbach resonances in electron-positronium continuum and the close-coupling model

Arindam Basu, Arnab Ghosh

A three-state and a six-state close-coupling approximation have been employed to investigate the e − -Ps scattering below the first excitation threshold of the Ps atom. Present s - and p -wave phase shifts and total cross-sections are compared with the corresponding predictions of Ward et al. ( J. Phys. B , 20 (1987) 127). All the Feshbach resonances below the n = 2 threshold, including 3 S e and 3 P e resonances as predicted by Ho ( Phys. Lett. A , 120 (1984) 348 and Phys. Rev. A , 60 (1999) 2834), have been obtained.

Positronium formation and threshold behavior in positron-sodium collisions at low energies

Ning-Ning Gao, Hui-Li Han, Ting-Yun Shi

We investigate the elastic and inelastic scattering of positrons by sodium atoms in both the ground state, Na($3s$), and excited states, Na*($3p$, $4s$, $3d$), using the hyperspherical coordinate method with a model potential to represent the atomic core. The threshold behavior of positronium (Ps) formation cross sections is analyzed as the positron impact energy $E$ approaches zero. Within this framework, we derive a generalized expression for partial-wave Ps-formation cross sections at low positron energies, which applies to both ground-state and excited-state sodium targets. Our results confirm that the total threshold behavior follows the expected power-law dependence: \( σ_{\text{Ps}} \propto E^{-1/2} \) for exothermic reactions and \( σ_{\text{Ps}} \propto E^{a} \) for endothermic reactions, where \( a > 0 \). Furthermore, we find that Ps-formation cross sections for positron scattering from excited Na states are significantly larger than those from the ground state in the low-energy region. A notable enhancement of Gailitis-Damburg oscillations is observed above the Ps($n=2$) threshold, which may account for the increase observed in experimental data. Incorporating contributions from excited sodium targets improves agreement with experimental results and may help resolve discrepancies between theoretical predictions and measurements.

Low-energy positron scattering from metastable helium

Anonymous, Hui-Li Han, Ting-Yun Shi +1 more

Low-energy positron scattering from singlet and triplet metastable He($1s2s$) is investigated using the $R$-matrix propagation method in hyperspherical coordinates. Elastic and positronium-formation cross sections are reported, and near-threshold resonance structures are analyzed in terms of eigenphase sums and the time-delay matrix. For the triplet target, the calculated cross sections are in agreement with available convergent-close-coupling results and display the expected threshold behavior. Beyond the known $S$-wave features, Feshbach resonance series in higher partial waves extending up to highly excited atomic thresholds are systematically identified. The time-delay matrix further uncovers hidden resonances that produce obvious structures in the positronium-formation cross sections.

S-wave resonances in the positron–helium scattering

Zhenzhong Ren, Hui-Li Han, Ting-Yun Shi

We have performed a three-body calculation for investigation of S-wave resonances in the positron–helium scattering in the hyperspherical coordinates. B-splines are used to obtain accurate hyperspherical potential curves and channel functions. An adiabatical hyperspherical approach is used to predict semi-quantitatively the position of the resonances. A multichannel calculation with the stabilization method is also used to extract accurately the positions and widths of resonances. We find four resonances associated with the He + –Ps( n = 2) channel. The resonance parameters for the lowest two resonances are in reasonable agreement with the calculations of Kar and Ho ( 2004 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 37 3177 ), and two more new resonances below the Ps( n = 2) threshold are identified.
