Fano-like interference induced modification of Autler-Townes doublet spectrum via phase-dependent superposition of atomic states

Bibhas Kumar Dutta, Pradipta Panchadhyayee

Abstract A four-level atomic model is proposed to exhibit the evolution of Fano-like interference effect in the spontaneous emission spectrum of Autler-Townes (AT) doublet when the atom is initially prepared in the phase-dependent superposition of quantum states. By using this model, phase-dependent generation of a narrow spectral line within the AT-doublet is predicted. This feature is shown to be modified by the AT-peak-splitting effect. In addition, it has been also shown that the latter may be accompanied by an anomalous peak shifting effect, which is found to be obtained in a typical phase-coherent atomic ensemble or phaseonium under consideration. As a whole, the emission spectrum can be obtained with three peaks instead of two peaks associated with a sharp spectral hole as a consequence of the emergence of asymmetric Fano-like resonance. This is the most interesting outcome of the present study.

Comment on “Interference-induced gain in the Autler-Townes doublet of a V-type atom in a cavity” and “Cavity implementation of quantum interference in a Λ-type atom”

R. Arun

In a couple of papers [Phys. Rev. A, 63, 033818 (2001); 63, 023810 (2001)], P. Zhou, S. Swain, and L. You studied the cavity-induced modifications to the Autler-Townes spectrum of three-level atoms due to the phenomenon of quantum interference. They demonstrated that probe gain can occur in either of the Autler-Townes doublet due to the cavity-induced interference among spontaneous decay channels. In this Comment, we show that this conclusion is incorrect and it contradicts the thermodynamic equilibrium conditions of the atomic system in steady state.

Asymmetric Autler–Townes Splitting

L. Yu. Nad’kin, О. В. Коровай, D. A. Markov

Abstract The influence of two-photon processes on absorption in a system of excitons and biexcitons in the case of two-pulse interaction is studied. It is shown that taking into account two-photon processes leads to the possibility of observing the asymmetric Autler–Townes effect. At certain values of incident fields, the Autler–Townes effect can vanish, which is associated with the quantum interference of all interaction mechanisms. The possibility of controlling the absorption spectrum by varying the field intensities and resonance detunings of the incident radiation is predicted.
