Abstract

We propose an apparatus that realizes direct observation of nonlinear phase shifts induced by cross-phase modulation. The apparatus is based on a polarization-division Sagnac interferometer incorporating Faraday rotators, which, in principle, enables phase robustness, flexibility, and lossless operation. Here, we present the measurement of nonlinear phase shifts in a photonic crystal fiber, demonstrating the advantage of our system in its application to waveguide-type Kerr media. This apparatus is applicable to lossless all-optical phase gates and switches.

Sagnac-loop phase shifter with polarization-independent operation

Tien Tjuen Ng, Darwin Gosal, Antı́a Lamas-Linares +1 more

A bulk-optics, polarization-independent phase shifter for photonic quantum information applications is demonstrated. The device is based on a transverse electro-optic modulator in a Sagnac-type loop containing Faraday rotators. This direction-dependent polarization rotation in the loop is combined with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer to form an optical switch with an on/off contrast of 96% and a switching time of 1.6 ns. We demonstrate that the device's operation maintains any arbitrary polarization state.

Measurement of the cross-Kerr nonlinearity induced by a single-photon-level coherent pulse in a photonic crystal fiber

We demonstrate the first observation of the cross‐Kerr nonlinearity induced by a single‐photon‐level coherent optical pulse in a photonic crystal fiber. Taking advantage of large nonlinearity and managed dispersion of the optical fiber, we have successfully measured very small (10−7) conditional phase shifts.

Polarization-Multiplexed Phase Modulation of Single Photons in a Sagnac Interferometer

Geping Liu, Yan Liang, Yuanjin Chen +1 more

Polarization-multiplexed phase modulation was demonstrated in a Sagnac interferometer for polarization-auto-compensating quantum key distribution. The Sagnac interferometer was composed of a polarization beam splitter to split the signal pulses into clockwise and counter-clockwise beams of different polarizations, a Faraday rotator to rotate the polarizations of the split clockwise and counter-clockwise beams, and two phase-modulators asymmetrically set in the Sagnac ring. With this structure, the delays of the electronic triggering signals for the two phase-modulators could be set separately, reducing the difficulty in the setup and achieving more precise phase modulation on different polarized beams. Such polarization-multiplexed phase modulation was appropriately gated in sequential time gates to ensure the long-term stability of automatic polarization compensation in the long-distance quantum key distribution system. Polarization-multiplexed phase modulation was implemented in a protocol quantum key distribution system of 25-km communicating fiber length, generating 20-kHz sifted key rate with a qubit error rate lower than 5%.

Dynamic lossless polarization gate using a coherently prepared atomic medium

Jihao Wu, Chengjie Zhu, Yaping Yang

We propose a dynamic lossless all-optical polarization gate using coherently prepared atomic media. We show that the loss/gain of two circularly polarized components of a linearly polarized probe field can be simultaneously eliminated by locking the power of the pump field and the external magnetic field intensity simultaneously. Using the polarization selective Kerr phase shift method, we can write π/2 (-π/2) phase shift to the right (left) circularly polarized component of the linearly polarized probe field with a choice of "magic" wavelength for the probe field. Consequently, the linear polarization state for the probe field acquires a 90° rotation at the exit of the medium. The scheme proposed in this Letter is helpful for applications in optical and quantum information processing and computation.

Polarization-independent single-photon switch based on a fiber-optical Sagnac interferometer for quantum communication networks

Alvaro Alarcón, P. González, Jaime Cariñe +2 more

An essential component of future quantum networks is an optical switch capable of dynamically routing single photons. Here we implement such a switch, based on a fiber-optical Sagnac interferometer design. The routing is implemented with a pair of fast electro-optical telecom phase modulators placed inside the Sagnac loop, such that each modulator acts on an orthogonal polarization component of the single photons, in order to yield polarization-independent capability that is crucial for several applications. We obtain an average extinction ratio of more than 19 dB between both outputs of the switch. Our experiment is built exclusively with commercial off-the-shelf components, thus allowing direct compatibility with current optical communication systems.
