Abstract

Short cycles in the Tanner graph of a low-density parity-check (LDPC) code may cause a severe performance degradation. In this paper, we investigate the cycle properties of quasi-cyclic LDPC (QC-LDPC) codes. We first analyze a necessary and sufficient condition for a cycle of a given length to exist, by using the sequence representation of a parity-check matrix for a QC-LDPC code. We then derive bounds which are necessary conditions for a QC-LDPC code to have a given girth in terms of its parameters. Our necessary conditions are applicable to any regular or irregular QC-LDPC codes as well as they improve the existing bounds for many classes of regular QC-LDPC codes.

Bounds on the Size of Parity-Check Matrices for Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check Codes

We also give a bound which is a sufficient condition for a QC-LDPC code of a given girth to be constructed by a greedy algorithm. Necessary conditions for avoiding cycles of length 4 or 6 in regular quasi-cyclic LDPC codes

Kyung-Joong Kim, Jin-Ho Chung, Kyeongcheol Yang

In this paper we investigate the cycle properties of regular quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes. Using the sequence representation, we analyze the conditions for short cycles to exist in regular QC-LDPC codes and then give necessary conditions for avoiding short cycles in terms of their parameters. Numerical results show that our bounds on the number of rows in the parity-check matrices for regular QC-LDPC codes without cycles of length 4 or 6 are tighter than any other known bounds.

Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check Codes Based on Progressive Cycle Growth Algorithm

Yuanhua Liu, Meiling Zhang, Niu Xin-Liang

Short cycles in the Tanner graph of a given LDPC code has negative effect on the performance of iterative decoding. To improve the performance, we presented an approach for constructing Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check (QC-LDPC) codes whose associated Tanner graph has large girth and a small amount of short cycles. Each column block of the parity check matrix was designed by adding circulant permutation sub-matrices one after another, provided the current parity check matrix has minimal number of short cycles. The condition for the proposed QC-LDPC codes to have girth at least 6 was also analyzed. Regular and irregular QC-LDPC codes with various lengths and rates can be constructed. Simulations show that the proposed QC-LDPC codes have less short cycles and better performance than existing progressive edge growth based QC-LDPC codes.

A necessary and sufficient condition for determining the girth of quasi-cyclic LDPC codes

Xiaofu Wu, Xiaohu You, Chunming Zhao

The parity-check matrix of a quasi-cyclic low- density parity-check (QC-LDPC) code can be compactly represented by a polynomial parity-check matrix. By using this compact representation, we derive a necessary and sufficient condition for determining the girth of QC-LDPC codes in a systematic way. The new condition avoids an explicit enumeration of cycles for determining the girth of codes, and thus can be well employed to generate QC-LDPC codes with large girth.

Girth of Tanner’s (3, 5) Quasi-Cyclic LDPC Codes

Sunghwan Kim, Jong‐Seon No, Habong Chung +1 more

In this paper, the cycles of Tanner’s (3, 5) quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are analyzed and their girth values are derived. The conditions for the existence of cycles of lengths 4, 6, 8, and 10 in Tanner’s (3, 5) QC LDPC codes of length 5p are expressed in terms of polynomial equations in a 15-th root of unity of the prime field Fp. By checking the existence of solutions for these equations over Fp, the girths of Tanner’s (3, 5) QC LDPC codes are derived.

In this correspondence, the cycles of Tanner (3,5) quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are analyzed and their girth values are derived. The conditions for the existence of cycles of lengths 4,6,8, and 10 in Tanner (3,5) QC LDPC codes of length 5p are expressed in terms of polynomial equations in a 15th root of unity of the prime field F/sub p/. By checking the existence of solutions for these equations over F/sub p/, the girths of Tanner (3,5) QC LDPC codes are derived.
