A finite lattice study of the critical behaviour of the two-dimensional biaxial next-nearest-neighbour Ising model

Abstract

The critical behaviour of an Ising model with competing first- and third-nearest-neighbour interactions ('biaxial next-nearest-neighbour Ising' or BNNNI model) on the square lattice is investigated by finite lattice methods. In the ferromagnetic region, the phase boundary is located with an accuracy at least equal to that of alternative methods. In the antiphase region, distinctive structure in finite lattice estimators is found over an extended temperature range. However, the nature of the transition remains unclear.

Critical behaviour of the two-dimensional biaxial next-nearest-neighbour Ising model. A Monte Carlo study

Michael J. Velgakis, J. Oitmaa

The critical behaviour of an Ising model with competing interactions along both axes of a square lattice (the BNNNI model) is investigated by Monte Carlo methods. Convincing evidence for the existence of modulated structures near the transition(s) is obtained but the form of the phase diagram remains unclear.

Monte Carlo studies of the Ising square lattice with competing interactions

Ansgar Kalz, A. Honecker, Sebastian Fuchs +1 more

We use improved Monte-Carlo algorithms to study the antiferromagnetic 2D-Ising model with competing interactions J 1 on nearest neighbour and J 2 on next-nearest neighbour bonds. The finite-temperature phase diagram is divided by a critical point at J 2 = J 1 /2 where the groundstate is highly degenerate. To analyse the phase boundaries we look at the speciflc heat and the energy distribution for various ratios of J 2 / 1 . We find a first order transition for small J 2 > J 1 /2 and the transition temperature suppressed to T C = 0 at the critical point.

The square-lattice Ising model with first and second neighbour interactions

J. Oitmaa

The critical behaviour of the square-lattice Ising model, with nearest and next-nearest neighbour interactions of either sign, has been investigated by means of high-temperature series. lhe location of the critical lines in the coupling constant plane has been accurately determined. Along the critical line which corresponds to transitions to the layered or superantiferromagnetic state a breakdown of universality is observed and explicit numerical estimates obtained for the exponent of the ordering susceptibility.

Phase diagram of the Ising square lattice with competing interactions

Ansgar Kalz, A. Honecker, Sebastian Fuchs +1 more

We restudy the phase diagram of the 2D-Ising model with competing interactions J1 on nearest neighbour and J2 on next-nearest neighbour bonds via Monte-Carlo simulations. We present the finite temperature phase diagram and introduce computational methods which allow us to calculate transition temperatures close to the criticalpoint at J2 = J1/2. Further on we investigate the character of the different phase boundariesand find that the transition is weakly first order formoderate J2 > J1/2.
