Adiabatic transport properties of an exactly soluble one-dimensional quantum many-body problem

Abstract

We study an interacting one-dimensional quantum lattice gas, based on the Heisenberg-Ising ring. The particles are given a charge, and the ring is threaded by a magnetic flux. We then calculate exactly the energy of the state, which begins as the ground state with zero magnetic flux, when the magnetic flux is adiabatically increased. We find the result that the period of the ground state is two flux quanta, which can be interpreted as charge carriers with half-integer charge.

Twisted boundary conditions and the adiabatic ground state for the attractiveXXZLuttinger liquid

Naichang Yu, Michael Fowler

The one-dimensional attractive lattice fermion gas equivalent to the Heisenberg-Ising spin-1/2 chain is studied for a ring geometry threaded by magnetic flux. We find that for charged fermions having interaction strength \ensuremath{\Delta}=cos(\ensuremath{\pi}/p) with p noninteger, the adiabatic ground state is periodic in the magnetic flux threading the chain, with period two flux quanta, as found by Shastry and Sutherland for the repulsive case. We find that, at particular values of the threading field, a sequence of initially zero-energy bound states form at the Fermi surface during the adiabatic process, the largest containing [p] (the integer part of p) fermions. This largest bound state moves rapidly around to the other Fermi point where it sequentially unbinds. We find Berry's phase for the whole process to be [p]\ensuremath{\pi}. For p integer, as \ensuremath{\Phi} increases, eventually all the particles in the system go into bound states of size [p]. The period in this case is of order the size of the system. The charge-carrying mass of the fermions is calculated by finding the energy of the adiabatic ground state with twisted boundary conditions.

Berry’s phase in a one-dimensional quantum many-body system

Gunter Markus Schutz

We study an interacting one-dimensional quantum lattice gas of massive fermions on a ring with L lattice sites. The ring is threaded by a magnetic flux corresponding to a twist in boundary conditions. We compute the periodicity of the ground state under an adiabatically increasing flux and the associated Berry's phase occurring in this process. The model has a second-order phase transition line which coincides with a line where the Berry phase changes nonanalytically.

Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg-Ising ring in the presence of a magnetic flux: Relevance of domain-wall dynamics

G. Gómez-Santos

We consider a system of charged spinless fermions in a ring governed by the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg-Ising Hamiltonian and in the presence of a magnetic flux. We find that the two broken-symmetry ground states evolve adiabatically with increasing flux with a period corresponding to two flux quanta, while the period of the total spectrum is one flux quantum. This behavior, already observed for this system in the gapless regime [B. Sutherland and B. S. Shastry, Phys. Rev. Lett. 65, 1833 (1990)], is shown to be a natural consequence of the relevant degrees of freedom involved in the low-energy physics of this system: antiferromagnetic domain walls or solitons, with half the charge of the original particles. A space-time approach is introduced to describe the dynamics of these objects, affording a complete topological classification of space-time histories of the system. This allows a physically complete understanding of the ground-state-subspace evolution with increasing flux in the antiferromagnetic broken-symmetry regime. In this case, the flux period doubling can be explained in terms of the Berry's phase gained by the two degenerate broken-symmetry ground states upon adiabatic switching of the flux.

Exact solutions for two interacting particles in a one-dimensional ring with a magnetic flux

Qiming Li, J. Callaway

We solve the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model with a magnetic flux analytically for the case of two particles. We find that bound states are ground states only for attractive interactions. We have studied the variation of the ground-state energy as a function of the flux. For the bound state, the period of the oscillation is half of a flux quantum. The dependence of the magnitude of the energy barrier on the size of the ring is discussed in connection with the possible existence of the flux quantization in the thermodynamic limit.

Preformed pairs in flat Bloch bands

Murad Tovmasyan, Sebastiano Peotta, Long Liang +2 more

In a flat Bloch band, the kinetic energy is quenched and single particles cannot propagate since they are localized due to destructive interference. Whether this remains true in the presence of interactions is a challenging question because a flat dispersion usually leads to highly correlated ground states. Here we compute numerically the ground-state energy of lattice models with completely flat band structure in a ring geometry in the presence of an attractive Hubbard interaction. We find that the energy as a function of the magnetic flux threading the ring has a half-flux quantum ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Phi}}}_{0}/2=hc/(2e)$ period, indicating that only bound pairs of particles with charge $2e$ are propagating, while single quasiparticles with charge $e$ remain localized. For some one-dimensional lattice models, we show analytically that in fact the whole many-body spectrum has the same periodicity. Our analytical arguments are valid for both bosons and fermions, for generic interactions respecting some symmetries of the lattice and at arbitrary temperatures. Moreover, for the same one-dimensional lattice models, we construct an extensive number of exact conserved quantities. These conserved quantities are associated to the occupation of localized single quasiparticle states and force the single-particle propagator to vanish beyond a finite range. Our results suggest that in lattice models with flat bands preformed pairs dominate transport even above the critical temperature of the transition to a superfluid state.

Exact solution of the one-dimensional Hubbard model in a magnetic field

Gang Su, Bao‐Heng Zhao, Mo‐Lin Ge

By means of the Bethe-ansatz method, the one-dimensional Hubbard model with repulsive on-site coupling in an external magnetic field is solved exactly. It is found that the energy of the ground state depends on the magnetic flux \ensuremath{\varphi} through the ring formed by a periodic lattice chain, and the lowest-energy state corresponds to \ensuremath{\varphi}=n(hc/2e), with n an integer and -e the electron charge. The calculations illustrate that the strongly correlated Hubbard ring with periodic boundary conditions in its ground state is a superconducting ring. It can also be shown that the system possesses an internal SU(2)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}SU(2) symmetry.
