Collisional angular momentum mixing of f states of Na

Abstract

In Na, the energy gap $\ensuremath{\Delta}E$ between the $n$, $d$ state and the $n$, $l>2$ states is ten times larger than $\ensuremath{\Delta}E$ between $n$, $f$ and the $n$, $l>3$ states. To investigate the effect of this difference on the $d$- and $f$-state $l$-mixing cross sections, ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{d}$ and ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{f}$, we have recently carried out experiments to measure ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{d\ensuremath{-}f}$, the $l$-mixing cross sections for a microwave-induced mixture of $d$ and $f$ states. Using the previously measured values of ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{d}$, we have derived values of ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{f}$ which have the same $n$ dependence as ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{d}$. ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{f}$ is larger than ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{d}$ for Ne, but smaller for He and Ar. In addition, we have analyzed the final states after one collision with Ar using selective field ionization of the $17l$ states and have observed that after one collision all the $l$ states are equally populated indicating that there are no $\ensuremath{\Delta}l$ selection rules for the process. This confirms the earlier suggestion that $l$ mixing is caused by a short-range interaction.

Collisional angular-momentum mixing of Rydberg states of Na by He, Ne, and Ar

Thomas F. Gallagher, S. A. Edelstein, R. M. Hill

The collisional angular-momentum mixing of $n=5\ensuremath{-}15$ Na $d$ states with the $l>2$ states of the same $n$ has been studied using He, Ne, and Ar as collision partners. At rare-gas pressures of \ensuremath{\sim}1 Torr, the $l\ensuremath{\ge}2$ states are thoroughly mixed and the mixture decays at the average radiative lifetime of all the $l\ensuremath{\ge}2$ states of the same $n$. Using \ensuremath{\sim}1 Torr of neon to collisionally mix the $l\ensuremath{\ge}2$ states, the average lifetime for $l\ensuremath{\ge}2$ was measured for each $n$ and compared to the theoretical prediction for hydrogen, with which it is in excellent agreement. The cross section for $l$ mixing by each of the gases is found to increase sharply from $n=5 \mathrm{to} 10$ and decrease above $n=10$. The magnitudes of the $l$-mixing cross sections are found to correlate with the low-energy scattering lengths of the collision partners.

Collisional angular-momentum mixing of Na Rydberg states with Xe

Ravinder Kachru, Thomas F. Gallagher, F. Gounand +2 more

The collisional angular-momentum mixing of the $\mathrm{Na}\mathrm{nd}$ Rydberg states into states of higher angular momentum with Xe as the collisional partner has been studied in zero field and in the presence of a small electric field. The collisional $l$-mixing cross section in zero field has been measured for $9\ensuremath{\le}n\ensuremath{\le}23$ using a vapor-cell-fluorescence method and a crossed-beam technique with a selective-field-ionization (SFI) scheme as the state detector. Using the $|{m}_{l}|$ selectivity of the SFI, we have also investigated the final-$|{m}_{l}|$-state distribution of the collisionally populated states of $l>2$. Our measurements suggest that the collisionally populated states have predominantly low $|{m}_{l}|$ values ($|{m}_{l}|\ensuremath{\le}2$). An application of a low electric field (\ensuremath{\sim} 50 V/cm) substantially reduces the collisional population of the low-$|{m}_{l}|$ states, thus reducing the total cross section as well.

Collisional angular-momentum mixing of highly excited Na(nD2) states by N2 and CO

Thomas F. Gallagher, R. E. Olson, William E. Cooke +2 more

Cross sections for the collisional $l$ mixing of $\mathrm{Na}(n^{2}D)$ states from $n=5 \mathrm{to} 14$ by ${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$ and CO have been measured by time-resolved laser fluorescence and calculated in a two-state approximation by assuming the perturbing gases are spherically symmetric. For both CO and ${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$ the experimental cross sections rise sharply from $n=5$ to $n=10$ and remain constant for $n>10$. The theoretical calculations overestimate the experimental cross sections by a factor of 3 from $n=10 \mathrm{to} 12$, but are in good agreement for the smaller $n$ values.

Collision-Induced Mixing in the First Excited States of Sodium and Potassium

J. A. Jordan, P. A. Franken

The cross sections for the collision-induced transfer of excitation from the $^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2}}$ level to the $^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2}}$ level of the first excited states of the alkali atoms have been measured for several alkali-noble gas systems. The cross sections were determined with a conventional resonance fluorescence technique in which the radiation from a spectral source was absorbed and re-emitted by an alkali vapor at low pressure (\ensuremath{\sim}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}6}$ Torr), and the scattered light analyzed with a scanning spectrometer. Provision was made for the introduction of various noble gases at controlled pressures into the alkali vapor. The determined cross sections are (in units of ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}16}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$): Na-He, 41.1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2.9; Na-Ne, 36.1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2.5; Na-Ar, 64.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}5.2; Na-Kr, 68.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}5.5; Na-Xe, 61.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}4.9; K-He, 52.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}5.8; K-Ne, 14.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.2; K-Ar, 34.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}3.1. The quoted errors are estimated 70% confidence intervals. The measurements are compared with other experimental results and with various estimated cross sections.

Cross sections for the Na(4D)→Na(4F) excitation energy transfer induced by collisions with He, Ar and Na atoms

Vlasta Horvatić, Mladen Movre, Cedomil Vadla

Abstract. The cross sections for the Na.4D/! Na.4F / excitation energy transfer induced by collisions with He, Ar and Na ground-state atoms have been measured. The sodium atoms in the 4D state have been produced by two-photon excitation using cw laser radiation at 578.89 nm. Within a model which takes into account collisional population and depopulation of the 4F level as well as radiative relaxation (direct or cascade) of the 3D, 4P, 4D and 4F states ending in the 3P level, the rate for the Na.4D / ! Na.4F / collisional transfer turns out to be related to the ratio of the steady-state populations created in 3D and 4D states. They have been determined by measuring the fluorescence intensities of the 3D! 3P and 4D! 3P transitions. The measurements yield the following cross section values for those
