Spin and Energy Transport in Anisotropic Magnetic Chains with S=12

Abstract

Spin and energy transport in spin-\textonehalf{} anisotropic magnetic chains with nearest-neighbor interactions are studied in the high-temperature limit. The analysis is based on a calculation of the zeroth, second, and fourth moments of the Fourier transforms of the spin and energy density correlation functions. Spin diffusion is predicted for sufficiently small values of the wave vector, except in the $\mathrm{XY}$ limit. Energy transport is nondiffusive for all values of the wave vector. Energy diffusion is predicted for chains with isotropic nearest-neighbor interactions and spin greater than \textonehalf{} as well as for spin-\textonehalf{} two-dimensional square lattices and three-dimensional simple and body-centered cubic lattices having isotropic nearest-neighbor interactions.

Energy Transport at Finite Temperatures in Isotropic Magnetic Chains with S=12

David A. Krueger

Energy transport is shown to be nondiffusive at finite temperatures in a magnetic chain of spin-\textonehalf{} particles with isotropic nearest-neighbor Heisenberg interactions in zero external field. In a uniform magnetic field, the Zeeman energy ensures that energy diffusion is reestablished at all temperatures if spin diffusion is present. At infinite temperatures the introduction of weak next-nearest-neighbor interactions also reestablishes energy diffusion. We use the Mori-Kawasaki expression for the diffusion constant in terms of the second and fourth moments of the time Fourier transform of the relaxation function. Investigation of the sixth moment indicates that the time derivative of the energy density exhibits diffusive behavior even though the energy density does not.

Thermal transport in the anisotropic Heisenberg chain with S = 1/2 and nearest-neighbor interactions

David L. Huber

The purpose of this note is to connect early work on thermal transport in spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains with uniaxial exchange anisotropy and nearest-neighbor interactions that was based on a moment analysis of the Fourier transform of the energy density correlation function with subsequent studies that make use of thermal current correlation functions.

Spin diffusion and the anisotropic spin- 12 Heisenberg chain

Jesko Sirker

Measurements of the spin-lattice relaxation rate $1∕{T}_{1}$ by nuclear magnetic resonance for the one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}\mathrm{Cu}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ have provided evidence for a diffusionlike contribution at finite temperature and small wave vector. By analyzing real-time data for the auto- and nearest-neighbor spin-spin correlation functions obtained by the density-matrix renormalization group I show that such a contribution indeed exists for temperatures $T>J$, where $J$ is the coupling constant, but that it becomes exponentially suppressed for $T⪡J$. I present evidence that the frequency dependence of $1∕{T}_{1}$ in the Heisenberg case is smoothly connected to that in the free fermion case where the exponential suppression of the diffusionlike contribution is easily understood.

Finite-temperature transport in the gapped spin- 1 2 XXZ chain and one-dimensional lattice spinless fermion model

J. M. P. Carmelo, Pedro D Sacramento

It is well established that at zero magnetic field $h=0$, the spin diffusion constant of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ chain is for anisotropy $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}>1$ finite for both low and high temperatures, implying that the type of spin transport is normal diffusive. Although it is expected that this holds for all finite temperatures $T>0$, the calculation of the spin diffusion constant for all $T$ is typically intractable. Here we consider a class of energy eigenstates that exist both for anisotropies $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}=1$ and $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}>1$. We show that at the isotropic point their contributions are behind the diffusion constant being infinite, spin transport being anomalous superdiffusive for $T>0$. That for $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}>1$ such states do not contribute to the diffusion constant is shown to imply it is finite, spin transport being normal diffusive for $T>0$. By combining the connection through a Jordan-Wigner transformation of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ chain to the one-dimensional (1D) lattice spinless fermion model at zero chemical potential $\ensuremath{\mu}=0$, for $V/J\ensuremath{\ge}1$ with its Bethe-ansatz solution, where $V$ is the nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion and $J=2t$ is twice the hopping integral $t$, in this paper we also address the issue of the $T>0$ charge transport of that model at $\ensuremath{\mu}=0$. It is found to be anomalous superdiffusive for $V/J=1$ and normal diffusive for $V/J>1$. Our results thus open the door to a key advance in the understanding for all finite temperatures $T>0$ of the spin transport in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ chain at $h=0$ for anisotropy $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}\ensuremath{\ge}1$ and of the charge transport in the 1D lattice spinless fermion model at $\ensuremath{\mu}=0$ for $V/J\ensuremath{\ge}1$.

Computer studies of spin and energy transport in one-dimensional Heisenberg magnets

N.A. Lurie, David L. Huber, Martin Blume

We have studied the dynamics of the classical Heisenberg chain at finite and infinite temperatures by computer simulation of an array of 4000 spins. The evaluation of the spin-spin and energy-energy wave-vector- and time-dependent correlation functions out to time $10{J}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ made it possible to determine the spin and energy diffusion constants. At infinite temperature we find ${D}_{S}=(1.33\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.10)JS{a}^{2}$ and ${D}_{E}=(3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1)JS{a}^{2}$. Values of ${D}_{S}$ have also been determined, with less precision, for ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions at temperatures $\frac{{k}_{B}T}{|J|}=1.0 \mathrm{and} 0.5$. Our results are compared with various theoretical estimates. In addition, we calculate the time-dependent spin and energy self-correlation functions.

One-Dimensional Isotropic Spin-1/2 Heisenberg Magnet with Ferromagnetic Nearest-Neighbor and Antiferromagnetic Next-Nearest-Neighbor Interactions

Takashi Tonegawa, Isao Harada

We study the ground-state and finite-temperature properties of the one-dimensional isotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg magnet with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions which compete with each other. Extrapolating the exact results for finite-size systems of up to 20 spins, we estimate the ground-state energy and the ground-state two-spin correlation function in the infinite-size limit. Using the cluster transfer matrix method, we also calculate the temperature dependence of the internal energy and the specific heat and that of the inverse correlation length and the wave number, by both of which the asymptotic behavior of the two-spin correlation function in the long-distance limit is characterized. We compare the results of these calculations with those obtained previously for the case where the nearest-neighbor interaction is antiferromagnetic.
