Abstract

Degenerate as well as nondegenerate three-level two-photon laser (TPL) models are derived. In the limit of equal cavity losses for both fields, it is shown that the nondegenerate model reduces to the degenerate one. We also demonstrate the isomorphism existing between our degenerate TPL model and that of a dressed-state TPL. All these models contain ac-Stark and population-induced shifts at difference from effective Hamiltonian models. The influence of the parameters that control these shifts on the nonlinear dynamics of a TPL is investigated. In particular, the stability of the periodic orbits that arise at the Hopf bifurcation of the system and the extension of the self-pulsing domains of the system are studied, revealing the role played by the detuning and ac-Stark parameters.

Theoretical study of a two-photon double-beam laser

Shi-Yao Zhu, Marlan O. Scully

A nondegenerate two-photon laser in a cascade three-level atomic system is studied. The difference between the laser and that derived from an effective Hamiltonian is discussed. Photon number distributions about field 1 are presented. The effects of field 2 on field 1 are studied in detail. Field 2 can play a role of gain enhancement or gain reduction for field 1. This is due to two actions of field 2: reducing the population of the intermediate level and changing the detuning really acting upon field 1, which is caused by the ac Stark shift.

Nonlinear dynamics of a class-a two-photon laser with injected signal in cascade systems

Javier F. Urchueguía, V. Espinosa, Germán J. de Valcárcel

The dynamics of a two-photon laser with injected signal (TPLIS) in the limit of high quality cavity (class-A laser) is analysed by explicitly considering the underlying multi-level structure of the amplifying medium. A three-level cascade system is considered which retains the basic physics of the microscopic lasing processes. In this way the usual two-photon laser equations are consistently modified by the appearance of different dynamic frequency shifts dependent on the two-photon population inversion and on the laser intensity (ac-Stark shift). Although the basic instability scenarios are not qualitatively modified with respect to the effective two-level TPLIS, from the quantitative point of view, population-induced shifts heavily affect the threshold of appearance of instabilities.

Stability properties of a resonant cascade laser

Germán J. de Valcárcel, Eugenio Roldán, Ramon A. Vilaseca

The emission of a resonant nondegenerate cascade laser in which up to two fields can be simultaneously amplified inside a cavity is theoretically investigated. Each field is resonantly coupled with one of the transitions of a ladder three-level atomic system, in conditions of homogeneous broadening. General analytical expressions for zero-, one-, and two-field solutions are given. Cooperative emission between both fields is found. Through the linear stability analysis of these solutions we obtain phase diagrams showing their respective domains of stability. Together with the existence of Hopf bifurcations associated with one-photon processes, which coincide with those of a Lorenz-Haken laser, a genuine Hopf bifurcation due to two-photon processes has been found. This last bifurcation does not require the ``bad cavity'' nor the ``Lorenz threshold'' conditions. The stability of the orbits that bifurcate from these critical points is analytically investigated. For this we have rewritten one of the standard criteria in a useful and straightforward way. Finally, the dynamic regimes exhibited by the system well above the instability thresholds is numerically investigated revealing transitions to chaos via quasiperiodicity.

Periodic attractors in two-photon processes

Paul Mandel, Nicolas Pettiaux, Wang Kaige +2 more

We consider three nonlinear optical models that display a two-photon process and exhibit a Hopf bifurcation corresponding to a phase instability. The three models describe second-harmonic generation, two-photon optical bistability, and degenerate four-wave mixing in resonant cavities. In all three cases we consider only the resonant configuration and analyze the attractors which emerge when the driving field is increased beyond the Hopf bifurcation threshold. At a finite distance from threshold, we find a hysteresis domain that involves a pair of periodic attractors. For all three models, each of the two solutions has the same ``field portrait'' i.e., the same representation in a plane whose axes are the imaginary and the real parts of the electric field. This suggests that the scenario is generic for this class of systems. On the other hand, the models for two-photon optical bistability and degenerate four-wave mixing in resonant cavities exhibit additional nongeneric attractors when the driving field is further increased.

Entanglement analysis of a two-atom nonlinear Jaynes–Cummings model with nondegenerate two-photon transition, Kerr nonlinearity, and two-mode Stark shift

Hamid Reza Baghshahi, Mohammad Kazem Tavassoly, Mohammad Javad Faghihi

An entangled state, as an essential tool in quantum information processing, may be generated through the interaction between light and matter in cavity quantum electrodynamics. In this paper, we study the interaction between two two-level atoms and a two-mode field in an optical cavity enclosed by a medium with Kerr nonlinearity in the presence of a detuning parameter and Stark effect. It is assumed that the atom–field coupling and third-order susceptibility of the Kerr medium depend on the intensity of the light. In order to investigate the dynamics of the introduced system, we obtain the exact analytical form of the state vector of the considered atom–field system under initial conditions which may be prepared for the atoms (in a coherent superposition of their ground and upper states) and the fields (in a standard coherent state). Then, in order to evaluate the degree of entanglement between the subsystems, we investigate the dynamics of the entanglement by employing the entanglement of formation. Finally, we analyze in detail the influences of the Stark shift, the deformed Kerr medium, the intensity-dependent coupling, and also the detuning parameter on the behavior of this measure for different subsystems. The numerical results show that the amount of entanglement between the different subsystems can be controlled by choosing the evolved parameters appropriately.

Effects of Atomic Coherence and Injected Classical Field on Chaotic Dynamics of Non-degenerate Cascade Two-Photon Lasers

Yajun Zhang, Huang Hong-Bin, Peng Yang +1 more

Based on the cascade two-photon laser dynamic equation derived with the technique of quantum Langevin operators with the considerations of coherently prepared three-level atoms and the classical field injected into the cavity, we numerically study the effects of atomic coherence and classical field on the chaotic dynamics of a two-photon laser. Lyapunov exponent and bifurcation diagram calculations show that the Lorenz chaos and hyperchaos can be induced or inhibited by the atomic coherence and the classical field via crisis or Hopf bifurcations.
