Optically bistable cavity driven by the output of another optically bistable cavity

J. Gripp, Luis A. Orozco

The canonical optically bistable system of two-level atoms inside a cavity can produce non-classical light.1 We investigate a more complex system formed by two of them. The output of the first cavity drives the second, but otherwise the two cavities are uncoupled.

Squeezing via optical bistability

M. D. Reid, Daniel F. Walls

The spectrum of squeezing in the output field for the optically bistable system of an atomic medium in a coherently driven cavity is analyzed. Good squeezing is attainable only in certain limits of atomic parameters and cavity detuning.

Optical bistability outside the rotating wave approximation in mixed species

Mona Ali

Optical bistable behavior for a system of inhomogeneously broadened two sorts of two-level atoms in a ring cavity is investigated outside the rotating wave approximation (RWA). The model Maxwell–Bloch equations are treated with Fourier decomposition up to first harmonic. The first harmonic output field component exhibits reversed or mushroom bistability simultaneously with bi- and double-bistability in the fundamental field component. Inhomogeneous broadening and transverse field effects are also considered.

Delayed-dynamical optical bistability within and without the rotating wave approximation

Stephen Lynch, R.A. Alharbey, Hanan Ali Batarfi +1 more

Optical bistability (OB) for a homogeneously broadened two-level atomic system in a ring cavity is investigated within and without the rotating wave approximation (RWA) using nonautonomous Maxwell–Bloch equations subject to a time delay. It is shown that the dynamics both within and without the RWA are susceptible to the introduction of time delays in the differential equations. A range of instability scenarios are found as certain parameters are ramped up and down and these can affect the bistable operation of the physical devices. However, the introduction of a time delay can also result in an important positive application; for the first time, as far as the authors are aware, it is shown that a type of butterfly hysteresis can occur in the fundamental component, which is a relatively strong output signal, and may be desired in optical signal processing.

Optical Bistability with Two-Level Atoms

Harry J. Kimble, Albert T. Rosenberger, P. D. Drummond

Since the first observation of optical bistability in 1976 (1), a large number of investigations of this phenomenon have appeared in the literature (2). Of particular theoretical interest has been the bistable system composed of "two-level" atoms within an optical resonator. While the theory in this case is well-advanced, only recently have experimental results been obtained (3,4). The work that we report is for absorptive bistability with an intracavity medium that approximates a collection of two-level atoms.
