Excitation Spectra of Linear Magnetic Chains

Kyozi Kawasaki

The restrictions on the excitation spectra of infinite linear magnetic chains due to the invariances of the Hamiltonian under time reversal and spin rotation have been studied by making use of the equivalence of a linear magnetic chain and a one-dimensional assembly of interacting Fermi particles. In particular, the spin-wave spectrum of an infinite antiferromagnetic chain is found to have a double periodicity of $\ensuremath{\pi}$ in the wave vector, in agreement with the numerical result of des Cloizeaux and Pearson.

The magnetic field dependence of the specific heat in quantum spin chains with axial symmetry

N. Papanicolaou, P Spathis

The magnetic specific heat in a class of spin- 1 / 2 chains with uniaxial anisotropy is determined accurately by a numerical solution of certain integral equations derived earlier through the Bethe ansatz. The specific heat exhibits a characteristic double peak as a function of an applied magnetic field which cannot be accounted for by the spin wave approximation. This illustrates the importance of non-linearity for the thermodynamics of quantum spin chains even at low temperature.
