Energy gap of theS=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain

Abstract

The S=1 isotropic antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain is studied by exact diagonalizations using the Lancz\"os algorithm. Energy gaps, structure factors at k=\ensuremath{\pi}, and staggered susceptibilities at T=0 are calculated for finite rings up to N=16, and extrapolated to an infinite system using Shanks' transformation. The estimated energy gap is 0.411\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.001, which agrees with the result of Monte Carlo calculations by Nightingale and Bl\"ote. Further, it is found that a finite-size correction decays exponentially and the decay constant corresponds with the correlation length, which is about 5.

Finite-lattice extrapolations for a Haldane-gap antiferromagnet

O. Golinelli, Th. Jolicœur, R. Lacaze

We present results of exact diagonalization of the isotropic antiferromagnetic S=1 Heisenberg chain by the Lanczos method, for finite rings of up to N=22 sites. The Haldane gap G(N) and the ground-state energy per site e(N) converge, with increasing N, faster than a power law. By VBS and Shanks transformations, the extrapolated values are G(\ensuremath{\infty})=0.41049(2) and e(\ensuremath{\infty})=-1.401485(2). The spin-spin correlation function is well fit by exp(-r/\ensuremath{\xi})/ \ensuremath{\surd}r with \ensuremath{\xi}=6.2.

The Haldane Gap of the S = 1 Heisenberg Antiferromagnetic Chain

Hiroki Nakano, Hiroto Tadano, Norikazu Todoroki +1 more

The one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet of S = 1 spins is studied by numericaldiagonalization method based on the Lanczos algorithm. The Haldane gap of this system isnumerically estimated from finite-size clusters under the twisted boundary condition up tothe 30-site system. The finite-size results are analyzed by a convergence-acceleration technique; the multistep procedure of the convergence acceleration is successfully carried out.The present estimate for the gap magnitude is more precisely than the previously reportedvalue from a Lanczos-diagonalization study. It also agrees well with the result reported ina study based on the density matrix renormalization group calculation. The present studyclarifies that Lanczos-diagonalization calculations can sufficiently contribute for preciselyestimating an energy gap although this method can treat only small clusters.

Effects of edges inS=1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains

Seiji Miyashita, Shoji Yamamoto

Properties of the ground state of open chains of the S=1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet are studied by a quantum Monte Carlo method. Size (length) dependences of the ground-state energy, the energy gap, the staggered magnetization 〈${\mathit{S}}_{\mathit{i}}^{\mathit{z}}$〉 and the spin-correlation function 〈${\mathit{S}}_{1}^{\mathit{z}}$${\mathit{S}}_{\mathit{i}}^{\mathit{z}}$〉 are investigated under free, fixed, and periodic boundary conditions. The size dependences are significant in chains with less than 25 spins, where the magnitude of the staggered magnetization is rather large. However, the fourfold degeneracy of the ground state and the exponential decay of correlations that are inherent to the Haldane system are recovered when the chain length becomes long enough. Both the staggered magnetization and the spin-correlation function decay exponentially. The correlation length is about six in lattice spacing, which agrees with the value obtained in the bulk.

Critical behavior of the S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain (abstract)

Jill C. Bonner

The spectral properties, and associated critical singularities, of spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains are of high current interest, both theoretical and experimental. Theoretical studies using the single mode approximation and also a Monte Carlo calculation indicate that the spectrum has a gap at k=π, as predicted by Haldane. They also predict the unusual feature that the excited state continuum is asymmetric about the mid-point of the Brillouin zone, k=π/2. However, neither approach is sufficiently accurate to predict reliably the magnitude of the gap at k=0 which was not discussed by Haldane. Our approach is to use static (spectral) calculations of excited states of chains of N=4 through 14 spins for all values of k, a novel feature not associated with previous finite-size calculations, to discuss the dispersion spectra of the S=1 Heisenberg chain. In addition, we have calculated dynamical properties, in particular S(q,ω), exactly for finite chains up to N=14 spins. This allows us to estimate the gap at k=0 to good accuracy, and we find that to within this accuracy the gap at k=0 is twice the Haldane gap at k=π. This result is important in connection with very recent neutron scattering and magnetization measurements. In addition, we have calculated the correlation length and critical singularities associated with dynamical quantities.

Lanczos calculation for thes=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain up toN=28 spins

Djalma Medeiros, G. G. Cabrera

Highly precise numerical calculations using a variation of the Lanczos method devised by Paige were performed for s=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg finite chains up to sizes N=28. Several interesting physical quantities, including the ground-state energy, the mass gap, and the spin-wave velocity, were computed and fitted for logarithmic finite-size corrections, as suggested by conformal invariance and Bethe ansatz calculations. A crossover size for a maximum of the spin-wave velocity is predicted for N\ensuremath{\sim}50, well above the current available sizes in a typical Lanczos simulation. A list of our numerical results is given along with extrapolated values using standard algorithms.

Numerical renormalization-group study of low-lying eigenstates of the antiferromagnetic S =1 Heisenberg chain

Steven R. White, David A. Huse

We present results of a numerical renormalization-group study of the isotropic S=1 Heisenberg chain. The density-matrix renormalization-group techniques used allow us to calculate a variety of properties of the chain with unprecedented accuracy. The ground-state energy per site of the infinite chain is found to be ${\mathit{e}}_{0}$\ensuremath{\simeq}-1.401 484 038 971(4). Open-ended S=1 chains have effective S=1/2 spins on each end, with exponential decay of the local spin moment away from the ends, with decay length \ensuremath{\xi}\ensuremath{\simeq}6.03(1). The spin-spin correlation function also decays exponentially, and although the correlation length cannot be measured as accurately as the open-end decay length, it appears that the two lengths are identical. The string correlation function shows long-range order, with g(\ensuremath{\infty})\ensuremath{\simeq}-0.374 325 096(2). The excitation energy of the first excited state, a state with one magnon with momentum q=\ensuremath{\pi}, is the Haldane gap, which we find to be \ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\simeq}0.410 50(2). We find many low-lying excited states, including one- and two-magnon states, for several different chain lengths. The magnons have spin S=1, so the two-magnon states are singlets (S=0), triplets (S=1), and quintuplets (S=2). For magnons with momenta near \ensuremath{\pi}, the magnon-magnon interaction in the triplet channel is shown to be attractive, while in the singlet and quintuplet channels it is repulsive.
