Abstract

A zero-temperature phase-diagram of the one-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model is investigated. It is shown that at zero temperature spins of any compact collection of lattice points with identically oriented external field are identically oriented.

THERMODYNAMICAL BEHAVIOR OF THE ISING MODEL WITH FERROMAGNETIC AND ANTI-FERROMAGNETIC INTERACTIONS

HUANG DONG, Weng Yonggang, (1)河南广播电视大学理工系; (2)郑州大学物理系

Using the integral equation method, we have got the analytic expressions of the internal energy and specific heat for the one-dimensional Ising model with nearest-neighbour antiferromagnetic repulsion Js and infinitely long-range exponential (Kae-Helfand-type) ferromagnetic attraction J1 acting only on even-numbered neighbours. Under the conditions of J1=1 and Js being 0.05, 0.1 and 0.3 respectively, we have drawn the curves of the internal energy and specific heat varying with temperature in zero external magnetic field, and pointed out its critical phase transition point. Under the conditions of J1=1,Js=0.1, we have drawn the curves of influence of the external magnetic field upon the internal energy and specific heat. Because there exist double solutions for the system under low temperatures, zero or weak external magnetic field and weaker antiferromagnetic interactions, it is inferred that there should exist another quasi-stable state of the model under the given conditions.

One-dimensional Ising model with long-range and random short-range interactions

A. P. Vieira, L. L. Gonçalves

The one-dimensional Ising model in an external magnetic field with uniform long-range interactions and random short-range interactions satisfying bimodal annealed distributions is studied. This generalizes the random model discussed by Paladin et al. (J. Phys. I France 4, 1994, p. 1597). Exact results are obtained for the thermodynamic functions at arbitrary temperatures, and special attention is given to the induced and spontaneous magnetization. At low temperatures the system can exist in a “ferrimagnetic” phase with magnetization 0 < σ < 1, in addition to the usual paramagnetic, ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. For a fixed distribution of the random variables the system presents up to three tricritical points for different intensities of the long-range interactions. Field-temperature diagrams can present up to four critical points. 1

On properties of the Ising model for complex energy/temperature and magnetic field

V. Matveev, Robert E. Shrock

We study some properties of the Ising model in the plane of the complex (energy/temperature)-dependent variable $u=e^{-4K}$, where $K=J/(k_BT)$, for nonzero external magnetic field, $H$. Exact results are given for the phase diagram in the $u$ plane for the model in one dimension and on infinite-length quasi-one-dimensional strips. In the case of real $h=H/(k_BT)$, these results provide new insights into features of our earlier study of this case. We also consider complex $h=H/(k_BT)$ and $μ=e^{-2h}$. Calculations of complex-$u$ zeros of the partition function on sections of the square lattice are presented. For the case of imaginary $h$, i.e., $μ=e^{iθ}$, we use exact results for the quasi-1D strips together with these partition function zeros for the model in 2D to infer some properties of the resultant phase diagram in the $u$ plane. We find that in this case, the phase boundary ${\cal B}_u$ contains a real line segment extending through part of the physical ferromagnetic interval $0 \le u \le 1$, with a right-hand endpoint $u_{rhe}$ at the temperature for which the Yang-Lee edge singularity occurs at $μ=e^{\pm iθ}$. Conformal field theory arguments are used to relate the singularities at $u_{rhe}$ and the Yang-Lee edge.

Low- and High-Temperature Behaviors of Ferromagnetic Ising Model of Infinite-Spin

Tsuyoshi Horiguchi, Ôjirô Nagai, Seiji Miyashita

We investigate low- and high-temperature properties of the ferromagnetic Ising model of infinite-spin. By using the cummulant expansion methods, we obtain low-temperature expansions of the free energy, the specific heat, the spontaneous magnetization, the zero-field susceptibility and so on, and high-temperature expansions of the free energy and the zero-field susceptibility. We compare the results with those obtained by Thompson for the system on the one-dimensional lattice, with those by using Monte Carlo simulations for the systems on the square lattice and on the simple cubic lattice and with those with the aid of the mean-field approximation.

Long-range random-field Ising model: Phase transition threshold and equivalence of short and long ranges

Luca Leuzzi, Giorgio Parisi A

The one-dimensional Ising model in a random field and with power-law decaying ferromagnetic bonds is studied at zero temperature. Comparing the scaling of the energy contributions of the ferromagnetic domain wall flip and of the random field \`a la Imry-Ma, a threshold value for the power $\ensuremath{\rho}$ of the long-range interaction can be determined, beyond which no critical behavior occurs. The critical threshold value is ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{c}=3/2$, at a difference with the zero field model in which ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{c}=2$. This prediction is analyzed by numerical computation of the ground states below, at, and above this threshold value. The analogy between the critical behavior of long-range one-dimensional systems and in short-range $D$-dimensional systems is investigated. At the critical threshold value of $\ensuremath{\rho}$, corresponding to the lower critical dimension, numerical evidence is found for a zero temperature transition at a finite critical field. Possible finite size crossover effects are discussed in this case. Some implications for the critical behavior of spin glasses in a field are conjectured.

The Devil's Staircase in an Ising Chain with Spin-Lattice Coupling

Norikazu Ishimura

A one-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising chain with spin-lattice coupling is considered. If the underlying lattice is harmonic but has no translational symmetry, there appears at zero temperature an effective interaction between down spins, which is repulsive and decays exponentially with distance. It is shown rigorotusly that this system exhibits in the ground state a devil's staircase as a function of an external magnetic field on account of the effective long range interaction. The ground state phase diagram is also given.
