Abstract

Calculations are made of the elements of the coherence matrix of radiation generated by a multifrequency laser with an isotropic resonator. The light statistics are used to show that the polarization state of the output radiation fluctuates from one pulse to another and that the average degree of polarization is inversely proportional to the square root of the number of frequencies emitted by the laser. The results of these theoretical calculations agree with the experimental results.

Multi-axial-mode laser effects in polarization spectroscopy

William C. Giancola, Thomas A. Reichardt, Robert P. Lucht

The effects of multifrequency-mode laser radiation on polarization-spectroscopy signal generation are investigated by direct numerical integration of the time-dependent density-matrix equations. The numerical solution of the density-matrix equations allows us to incorporate a physically reasonable model for pulsed dye-laser radiation in our analysis of the laser–resonance interaction. The laser radiation is modeled as the sum of electric fields from a finite number of modes that are assumed to have random pulse-to-pulse phases and exponentially distributed amplitudes. Calculations are performed for a homogeneously broadened resonance (only collisional broadening) and for a resonance that is both collision and Doppler broadened. The effect of the multimode laser radiation on polarization-spectroscopy line shapes and saturation curves is investigated for different values of the laser bandwidth and mode spacing and resonance collision and Doppler widths. The saturation parameter for the resonance is strongly dependent on the ratio of the laser bandwidth to the resonance collision width when the laser bandwidth is greater than the collision width. The pulse-to-pulse fluctuations in polarization-spectroscopy signal levels are found to decrease substantially for saturating pump intensities. The inclusion of the multimode laser structure into our density-matrix equations represents a significant advance in modeling the nonlinear interaction of laser radiation with atomic or molecular resonances.

Polarization self-action effects of partially polarized light in polarization inhomogeneous media

И. В. Шапочкина, Igor I. Gancheryonok, Thomas K. Dreier

On the basis of covariant approach some generalizations of the theory of polarization self-action effects in isotropic (polarization inhomogeneous) resonance media have been done. The results obtained demonstrate influence of the degree of polarization on evolution of polarization parameters of laser radiation propagating in polarization inhomogeneous media. We present new theoretical findings as well as demonstrate agreement between our results and known experimental data.

The resonant ionisation of atoms under multifrequency laser radiation

Nikolai B. Delone, Anatoly Viktorovich Masalov, V A Kovarski +1 more

The specific effects resulting from the non-monochromaticity of the external field for resonant ionisation of atoms under multifrequency laser radiation are discussed in two limiting cases: wide and narrow laser light spectra. The fluctuations of the radiation intensity and the final spectrum width are taken into account.

Periodic and chaotic variations of the intensity and polarization of light at the exit from a ring resonator filled with a nonlinear gyrotropic medium

Vladimir Makarov, A. V. Matveeva

An analysis is made of the amplitude and polarization effects which accompany the propagation of laser radiation in a ring resonator filled with a nonlinear gyrotropic medium. The ranges of the parameters of the radiation, resonator, and medium are found for which there are periodic and chaotic changes in the intensity, degree of ellipticity, and angle of rotation of the polarization ellipse of the output radiation. Analytic expressions are obtained for the frequency of changes in the output characteristics.

Coherent interaction of radiation pulses with resonant multilevel media (review)

Leonid A Bol'shov, Vladimir V. Likhanskii

A review is given of recent theoretical investigations on coherent propagation and nonlinear interaction of multifrequency ultrashort radiation pulses in resonantly absorbing media. An analysis is made of frequency conversion by parametric interaction and stimulated Raman scattering of laser pulses in resonant three-level media. New ways of controlling the parameters of coherent pulses and the use of multifrequency pulses in the spectroscopy of multilevel media are discussed. The experimental capabilities of the investigated effects are considered.
