Abstract

Using bosonization and phase shift representation, we rigorously treat backward scattering of electrons on an impurity in a one-dimensional interacting electronic system, and demonstrate that correlation exponents of the system depend on a phase shift induced by the backward scattering, and usual exponent duality of the correlation functions between ultraviolet and infrared fixed points comes from the phase shift dependence of the correlation exponents. Finally, we study the tunnelling conductance of the system at zero temperature and obtain a modified Landauer-Bütiker formula.

Multichannel impurity scattering in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid

Yu-Liang Liu

Using an elementary method, we demonstrate that (1) the duality of the correlation exponents near impurity site $x=0$ between ultraviolet and infrared fixed points is also valid for channel number larger than one; (2) the infrared fixed points ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}^{i}=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{\pi}/2$ do not correspond to two real half-infinity Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids even if the conductance is zero; (3) the electron's density of state at $x=0$ is enhanced compared with its neighbor ones; (4) as channel number is larger than (or equal to) two, the Fermi-edge singularity induced by backward scattering will be swept off by even small repulsive interaction of the electrons.

RENORMALIZATION OF POTENTIAL SCATTERING IN A ONE-DIMENSIONAL NON-LUTTINGER LIQUID: CONDUCTION AND X-RAY FERMI-EDGE SINGULARITY

Dongxiao Yue

We review some of our recent results on the potential scattering in a weakly interacting one-dimensional(1D) electron gas. The technique we developed is a poor man's renormalization group procedure in the scattered wave basis. This technique can treat the renormalizations of the scattering on the barrier and the scattering between the electrons in a coherent way, and it allows us to find the scattering amplitudes on a localized potential of arbitrary strength for electrons at any energy. The obtained phase shifts are used to study the Fermi-edge singularity in an interacting 1D electron system, where anomalous exponent of the power-law singularity in the vicinity of the edge is found. The transmission coefficient is directly related to the conductance of a 1D channel by the Landauer formula. Simple formulas that describe the conductance at any temperature are derived. In spin-[Formula: see text] systems, the electron–electron backscattering induces renormalizations of the interaction constants, which causes the low-temperature conductance to deviate from the results of the Luttinger liquid theory. In particular, the temperature dependence of the conductance may become nonmonotonic. In the presence of a magnetic field, backscattering gives rise to a peak in the differential conductance at bias equal to the Zeeman splitting.

Duality of Weak and Strong Scatterer in a Luttinger Liquid Coupled to Massless Bosons

I. V. Yurkevich, Alexey Galda, Oleg M. Yevtushenko +1 more

We study electronic transport in a Luttinger liquid with an embedded impurity, which is either a weak scatterer (WS) or a weak link (WL), when interacting electrons are coupled to one-dimensional massless bosons (e.g., acoustic phonons). We find that the duality relation, ΔWSΔWL=1, between scaling dimensions of the electron backscattering in the WS and WL limits, established for the standard Luttinger liquid, holds in the presence of the additional coupling for an arbitrary fixed strength of boson scattering from the impurity. This means that at low temperatures such a system remains either an ideal insulator or an ideal metal, regardless of the scattering strength. On the other hand, when fermion and boson scattering from the impurity are correlated, the system has a rich phase diagram that includes a metal-insulator transition at some intermediate values of the scattering.

Electronic Properties of Luttinger Liquid with Electron-Phonon Interaction

Alexey Galda

This thesis addresses a theoretical study of the problem of a single impurity embedded in a one-dimensional system of interacting electrons in presence of electron-phonon coupling. First we consider a system with a featureless point-like potential impurity, followed by the case of a resonant level hybridised with a Luttinger Liquid. The stress is made on a more fundamental problem of a featureless scatterer, for which two opposite limits in the impurity strength are considered: a weak scatterer and a weak link. We have found that, regardless of the transmission properties of phonons through the impurity, the scaling dimensions of the conductance in these limits obey the duality condition, \\( \\triangle_{WS}\\) \\( \\triangle_{WL}\\) = 1, known for the Luttinger Liquid in the absence of phonons. However, in the case when the strength of phonon scattering is correlated with electron scattering by the impurity, we find a nontrivial phase diagram with up to three fixed points and a possibility of a metal-insulator transition. We also consider the case of a weakly interacting electron-phonon system in the presence of a single impurity of an arbitrary scattering potential. In the problem of a resonant level attached to the Luttinger Liquid we show that the electron-phonon coupling significantly modifies the effective energy-dependent width of the resonant level in two different geometries, corresponding to the resonant and anti-resonant transmission in the Fermi gas.
