Abstract

We identify and classify the possible divergences of the charge and spin response functions of the Hubbard chain in a constant external magnetic field H=Hz^. When 0H${\mathit{H}}_{\mathit{c}}$, where ${\mathit{H}}_{\mathit{c}}$ is the critical field for full spin polarization, these divergences occur at the momenta \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2${\mathit{k}}_{\mathit{F}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}}$ for all values of U and density n=${\mathit{n}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\uparrow}}}$+${\mathit{n}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}}$; here ${\mathit{k}}_{\mathit{F}}$=\ensuremath{\pi}n/2 and ${\mathit{k}}_{\mathit{F}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\sigma}}}$=\ensuremath{\pi}${\mathit{n}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\sigma}}}$, so that 2${\mathit{k}}_{\mathit{F}}$=${\mathit{k}}_{\mathit{F}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\uparrow}}}$+${\mathit{k}}_{\mathit{F}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}}$. Divergences at \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}4${\mathit{k}}_{\mathit{F}}$ show up in the charge function when H=0 and U\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}. Finally, divergences at \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2${\mathit{k}}_{\mathit{F}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\uparrow}}}$ appear only for certain regions of these parameters. We discuss the possible connection of our results to the physics of the quasi-one-dimensional metals.

Instabilities of the Hubbard chain in a magnetic field

J. M. P. Carmelo, F. Guinea, Pedro D Sacramento

We find and characterize the instabilities of the repulsive Hubbard chain in a magnetic field by studying all response functions at low frequency \ensuremath{\omega} and arbitrary momentum. The instabilities occur at momenta which are simple combinations of the (U=0) \ensuremath{\sigma}=\ensuremath{\uparrow},\ensuremath{\downarrow} Fermi points, \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}${\mathrm{k}}_{\mathrm{F}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\sigma}}}$. For finite values of the on-site repulsion U the instabilities occur for single \ensuremath{\sigma} electron added or removed at momenta \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}${\mathrm{k}}_{\mathrm{F}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\sigma}}}$, for transverse spin-density wave (SDW) at momenta \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}${2\mathrm{k}}_{\mathrm{F}}$ (where ${2\mathrm{k}}_{\mathrm{F}}$=${\mathrm{k}}_{\mathrm{F}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\uparrow}}}$+${\mathrm{k}}_{\mathrm{F}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}}$), and for a charge-density wave and SDW at momenta \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}${2\mathrm{k}}_{\mathrm{F}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\uparrow}}}$ and \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}${2\mathrm{k}}_{\mathrm{F}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}}$. While removing or adding single electrons is dominant at zero magnetic field, the presence of that field brings about a dominance for the transverse \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}${2\mathrm{k}}_{\mathrm{F}}$ SDW over all the remaining instabilities for a large domain of U and density n values. We go beyond conformal-field theory and study divergences which occur at finite frequency in the one-electron Green function at half-filling and in the transverse-spin response function in the fully polarized ferromagnetic phase.

Spin and charge response to magnetic frustration in the Hubbard model

Yang Liu

Unusual normal-state properties of strongly correlated electron materials have been discovered in recent years. They can not be explained by traditional theories. Much work has been devoted to exploring the physical insight into these properties. In the dissertation, the study of spin and charge response to magnetic frustration in the Hubbard Model is presented. Using exact diagonalization techniques, the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a two-dimensional Hubbard model applied to a cluster with periodic boundary conditions have been obtained. Static and dynamic spin and charge correlation functions as well as one-particle excitation spectra have been calculated. The effects of magnetic frustration due to geometrical competition of different electron hopping terms are studied for various doping and short-range Coulomb interaction parameters. The calculated results are discussed in the framework of many-body physics.

Magnetic excitation spectra of strongly correlated quasi-one-dimensional systems: Heisenberg versus Hubbard-like behavior

Alberto Nocera, N. D. Patel, Jaime A. Fernandez-Baca +2 more

We study the effects of charge degrees of freedom on the spin excitation dynamics in quasi-one-dimensional magnetic materials. Using the density matrix renormalization group method, we calculate the dynamical spin structure factor of the Hubbard model at half electronic filling on a chain and on a ladder geometry, and compare the results with those obtained using the Heisenberg model, where charge degrees of freedom are considered frozen. For both chains and two-leg ladders, we find that the Hubbard model spectrum qualitatively resembles the Heisenberg spectrum---with low-energy peaks resembling spinonic excitations---already at intermediate on-site repulsion as small as $U/t\ensuremath{\sim}2--3$, although ratios of peak intensities at different momenta continue evolving with increasing $U/t$ converging only slowly to the Heisenberg limit. We discuss the implications of these results for neutron scattering experiments and we propose criteria to establish the values of $U/t$ of quasi-one-dimensional systems described by one-orbital Hubbard models from experimental information.

Spin and charge excitations of the degenerate Hubbard model in one dimension

P. Schlottmann

The degenerate Hubbard chain with N internal degrees of freedom is integrable if site occupations of more than two electrons are excluded. The ground state of the model has several unusual properties; e.g., the magnetic susceptibility has logarithmic singularities as the field H\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0 and also the specific-heat coefficient is singular. An extensive discussion of ground-state properties as a function of U and the band filling is presented. The elemental charge and spin excitations are derived for arbitrary U and band filling. If, on average, there is exactly one electron per site as a function of U, a qualitative change in the low-energy charge excitations is found at a critical value ${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{c}}$. This change is probably associated with a Mott metal-insulator transition (${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{c}}$=0 for N=2). The Fermi velocity is finite for U${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{c}}$ but vanishes for U>${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{c}}$ (for one electron per site). The spin-wave velocity is inversely proportional to the magnetic susceptibility for all U and band fillings. There are N-1 elemental spin-wave branches. For arbitrary band filling there are then N-1 soft modes at different finite momenta, all related to the Fermi surface. For exactly one electron per site, the spin-excitation spectrum can be mapped onto the one of the SU(N) Heisenberg chain. The implications of the hole states on superconductivity are also discussed.

Breakdown of charge homogeneity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model: Slave-boson study of magnetic order

Jannis Seufert, David Riegler, Michael Klett +2 more

We study the two-dimensional one-band Hubbard model on the square lattice through the spin rotation invariant Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson method, with an emphasis on the electron-doped regime. The phase diagram determined within mean field approximation reveals three different magnetically ordered phases separated by first-order transitions, and a wide instability region as indicated by a negative compressibility. We show that this conundrum of the unstable mean field domain is resolved by spatially mixed phases of neighboring stable states. We also find charge density wave type instabilities in the antiferromagnetically ordered (AFM) state at wave vectors commensurate with the doping. The corresponding charge and spin density response functions are calculated from a Gaussian fluctuations formalism about a magnetic saddle point, for which we provide a detailed derivation. Further, we present density and spin excitation spectra in the AFM phase, allowing for a quantitative calculation of the spin wave parameters, the gap in the longitudinal spin excitation spectrum, and the density excitations in the upper Hubbard band.

Fermi-liquid Landau parameters for a nondegenerate band: Spin and charge instabilities in the extended Hubbard model

Grégoire Lhoutellier, Raymond Frésard, Andrzej M. Oleś

We investigate the Landau parameters for the instabilities in spin and charge channels in the nondegenerate extended Hubbard model with intersite Coulomb and exchange interactions. To this aim we use the spin rotationally invariant slave boson approach and we determine the necessary inverse propagator matrix. The analytically derived spin Landau parameter ${F}_{0}^{a}$ for the half filled band uncovers the intrinsic instability of the nondegenerate Hubbard model towards ferromagnetism---negative intersite exchange interaction triggers a ferromagnetic instability at half filling before the metal-insulator transition, indicated by the divergence of the magnetic susceptibility at ${F}_{0}^{a}=\ensuremath{-}1$. This result is general and the instability occurs in the strongly correlated metallic regime for any lattice, in three or two dimensions. Next as an illustrative example we present numerical results obtained for the cubic lattice with nearest neighbor exchange $J$ and Coulomb $V$ elements and arbitrary electron density. One finds that the range of small doping near half filling is the most unstable one towards spin polarization, but only in the case of ferromagnetic intersite exchange $J<0$. Charge Landau parameter ${F}_{0}^{s}$ is lowered near half filling by increasing $U$ when the intersite Coulomb interaction $V$ is attractive, but in contrast to ${F}_{0}^{a}$ at $J<0$ it requires an attraction beyond a critical value ${V}_{c}$ to generate the divergence of the charge susceptibility at ${F}_{0}^{s}=\ensuremath{-}1$ in the metallic phase. This instability was found for a broad range of electronic filling away from half filling for moderate attraction.
