Quasiparticle pairing at arbitrary densities: a soluble model

Abstract

Quasiparticle pairing in a many-body medium, with pairwise boundary-condition model interactions, is discussed within a formalism which treats two-particle and two-hole interactions simultaneously. It is found that the possibility of two sorts of bound pairs one predominantly particle-like, which corresponds at zero density to a free bound state, and the other predominantly hole-like, which appears only above a certain critical density, and show that they form a continuous spectrum.

Exactly Solvable Many-Boson Model

R. W. Richardson

A many-boson model is formulated and expressions for its exact eigenstates and energies are obtained for both an arbitrary finite and an infinite number of bosons. The Hamiltonian of the model contains interactions between bosons whose momenta have equal magnitudes but opposite directions. The matrix elements of this interaction are taken to be a constant over a range of momenta surrounding k = 0. The ground state of the 2N-particle system is shown to be a product of N pair-creation operators acting on the vacuum state. Each of these pair-creation operators depends upon one of N parameters which are called pair energies. The N pair energies are shown to satisfy a coupled system of nonlinear algebraic equations. The energy of the state is the sum of the pair energies and the occupation probabilities of the single-particle levels are given as simple functions of the pair energies. Similar results are derived for the excited states of the system and for the states of an odd number of particles. These results are valid for both a repulsive and an attractive interaction, since they only depend upon the form of the interaction. The equations are solved algebraically for two model systems. The first of these is one whose single-particle kinetic energy takes on only one value. The equations for this system are solved for an arbitrary interaction strength and it is shown that the pair energies are proportional to the zeros of certain Laguerre polynomials. The second system is one in which the single-particle kinetic energy can take on two values. The equations for this system are solved in the strong repulsive-interaction limit and it is shown that the pair energies are proportional to the zeros of certain Jacobi polynomials. The excitation energies of this second system are shown to be proportional to 1/n and the occupations of the two single-particle levels in the ground state are shown to be proportional to n, where n is the total number of particles. For a repulsive interaction and an arbitrary single-particle spectrum, the algebraic equations for the pair energies are converted into an approximate integral equation for the density of roots which is accurate to order 1/n. This integral equation is solved for a strong interaction which, in the context of this model, means an interaction whose strength is greater than a constant times 1/V⅔ in the limit of a large volume. From this solution, the following results are obtained: (1) the lowest two single-particle levels have occupations of order n; (2) the excitation spectrum is that of a set of noninteracting quasiparticles; and (3) the quasiparticle spectrum has two zeros corresponding to the lowest two single-particle levels. Apart from the presence of two zeros, the quasiparticle spectrum does not differ significantly from that of the noninteracting particles.

Composite pairs and effective two-body scattering in a many-body medium

R. F. Bishop, H. B. Ghassib, Michael R. Strayer

The generalized off-shell scattering of pairs of constituent fermions embedded in an infinite system of identical particles having thermodynamic properties characterized by arbitrary values of the temperature and chemical potential, is examined using a temperature-dependent Green's-function formalism, which treats particle-particle and hole-hole excitations symmetrically. The important features which emerge are (i) the possible existence of bound-state pairs (of quasiparticles which are linear combinations of particle and hole states) which correspond to poles in the scattering amplitude at negative total energies depending parametrically on the properties of the medium and the total momentum of the interacting pair; (ii) a generalized unitarity condition from which one obtains a parametrization of the on-shell positive-energy scattering amplitude by a set of real effective phase shifts; (iii) that these phase shifts completely determine the large-separation asymptotic behavior of the scattering (positive energy) pair wave functions in a manner which is form equivalent to two-particle scattering in free space; and (iv) that the small- and large-momentum asymptotic limits of the phase shifts are related to the number of bound-state pairs in the medium via an analogous, but modified, form of Levinson's theorem for free scattering. The effects of these pairing singularities on the single-particle excitation spectrum, and hence on the thermodynamic behavior of the system are outlined.

Hartree--Fock--Bogoliubov Approximation for Finite Systems

Aurel Bulgac

Some general features of the spectrum of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations are examined. Special attention is paid to the asymptotic behavior of the single quasiparticle wave functions (s.qp.w.fs.), matter density distribution and density of the pair condensate. It is shown that due to the coupling between hole and particle states, the deeply bound hole states acquire a width and have to be treated as continuum states. The proper normalization of the s.qp.w.fs. is discussed.

Two-hole quasiparticles and pairing in the Hubbard model of high- superconducting cuprates

Michele Cini, A. Balzarotti

We propose a configuration interaction mechanism that leads to hole pairs with zero repulsion energy which are exact eigenstates of the two-band Hubbard Hamiltonian. The two-hole pairs have symmetry and arise from degenerate states at the Fermi level; we show that they must exist independently of the band filling. To discuss the possible relevance of these states to the problem of pairing in high- superconductors we solve five- and nine-site model clusters with four holes. The quasiparticles become dressed by the interaction with the background holes and get paired with a set of valence band parameters well established for high- cuprates. We predict a number of important experimental facts such as binding energies of the correct order of magnitude, the symmetry of the order parameter and the singlet - triplet energy separation of the Cooper pairs.

d-wave bound state of holes in an antiferromagnet

Didier Poilblanc, José A. Riera, Elbio R. Dagotto

The formation of bound states of holes in an antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 background is studied using numerical techniques applied to the t-J Hamiltonian on clusters with up to 26 sites. An analysis of the binding energy as a function of cluster size suggests that a two-hole bound state is formed for couplings larger than a ``critical'' value J/t${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Vert}}}_{\mathit{c}}$ The symmetry of the bound state is ${\mathit{d}}_{\mathit{x}}^{2}$-${\mathit{y}}^{2}$. We also observed that its ``quasiparticle'' weight ${\mathit{Z}}_{2\mathit{h}}$ (defined in the text), is finite for coupling J/t\ensuremath{\ge}J/t${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Vert}}}_{\mathit{c}}$. Thus, in the region J/t\ensuremath{\ge}J/t${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Vert}}}_{\mathit{c}}$ the bound state of two holes behaves like a quasiparticle with charge Q=2e, spin S=0, and ${\mathit{d}}_{\mathit{x}}^{2}$-${\mathit{y}}^{2}$ internal symmetry. The relation with recent ideas that have suggested the possibility of d-wave pairing in theories of the high-${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ cuprates is briefly discussed.
