Intrinsic Optical Bistability in Nonlinear Media

Abstract

A general class of optically bistable systems is described which operates without feedback and is based on the intrinsic response of certain nonlinear media. A detailed analysis of one such medium is presented which demonstrates that bistability may result in virtually all macroscopic optical and material parameters.

Optical bistability based on self-focusing

We have experimentally demonstrated a fundamentally new type of intrinsic optical bistability. The operation of this new class of device is based on self-focusing of a laser beam as it propagates through a nonlinear medium. It further differs from previous optical devices which exhibited intrinsic bistability (only optical feedback, no electrical feedback) in that the earlier devices have all required resonant optical cavities; no such cavity is required for this new type of device.

Intrinsic optical bistability in interaction of light with impurity centers in crystals

Vasily G. Arkhipkin, Iu. K. Verevkin

An optically bistable system is described that operates without feedback and is based on intrinsic response of impurity centers in a crystal interacting with laser light. An analysis is presented which demonstrates that bistability is possible in laser fields of 10 W/cm2.

New Mechanism of Intrinsic Bistability of the Optical Media under Repetitive Pulse Excitation

Alexander V. Ghiner, Gregory I. Surdutovich

A new type of intrinsic bistability is proposed when usually "non-bistable" nonlinear medium shows bistability under action of a time-dependent input signal. A strict criterion for observation of such a bistability is deduced. It depends on the shape of the temporal response of the nonlinear medium under action of a separate rectangular input pulse.

We experimentally demonstrate a fundamentally new type of intrinsic optical bistability that requires no resonant optical cavity. Operation is based on mutual self-focusing of counterpropagating laser beams in a nonlinear medium. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a fundamentally new type of optical bistability. 1 The operation of this new class of devices is based on self-focusing of light; the feedback required for bistability is provided by an apertured retroreflector. These devices exhibit intrinsic bistability (the feedback is optical) and are related to nonlinear waveguide devices proposed earlier. 2 Self-focusing occurs when a light beam having a nonuniform spatial profile (such as a Gaussian laser beam) and sufficient intensity propagates through a nonlinear medium having an intensity-dependent index of refraction. 3 Previously proposed devices that exhibited

Intrinsic polarization bistability in nonlinear media

Abstract This paper calculates the effect of a bistable polarization on the optical fields in a nonlinear medium. Bistabilities in effective refractive index and absorptivity are calculated. Bistability on reflection from a single surface is also described.
