Wavefront reproduction in stimulated Raman scattering

Abstract

Wavefront reproduction or reversal, observed earlier experimentally and interpreted for stimulated Brillouin scattering, is considered now in the case of stimulated Raman scattering, i.e., for the scattering accompanied by a relatively large frequency shift. A condition is derived for the frequency shift which ensures that the reproduction effect occurs also in stimulated Raman scattering.

Wavefront reversal based on anti-Stokes stimulated Raman scattering

Igor' M Bel'dyugin, E M Zemskov, V N Klushin +1 more

It is shown that wavefront reversal with a frequency shift is possible in axial anti-Stokes stimulated Raman scattering. The similarities and differences between this scheme and the phase conjugacy schemes proposed earlier are discussed. It is shown that the proposed scheme extends the class of processes in which wavefront reversal may be observed.

Some features of stimulated scattering of light

Boris Ya Zel'dovich, Valerii V Ragul'skii

Certain experimentally recorded features of the stimulated scattering of light are interpreted in terms of the phenomenon of wavefront reproduction. Stimulated scattering is often accompanied by laser action in which the transverse structure (mode) of the scattered light is governed by coincidence with the pump maxima and the longitudinal structure by the length of the effective resonator. This mechanism explains the periodic temperature dependence of stimulated Raman scattering.

Accuracy of wavefront reversal in stimulated scattering with a frequency and angular shift

Boris Ya Zel'dovich, M A Orlova

An analysis is made of distortions of the reversed wave in stimulated backscattering of light (backward WFR) caused by frequency and angular shifts of the scattered wave relative to the pump wave. The scattered field is expressed in the form of a series in terms of orthogonalized specklons comprising the reversed pump field and its transverse derivatives. It is found that for backward WFR with a frequency detuning Δω, the Stokes field ES(r, z) is not closest to the pump field E*L (r, z) to a field in the shifted plane E*L (r, z + Δz), where Δz=2Δω/Δg, g is the gain. Similar results are also obtained for an angular shift.

The Stimulated Raman Effect

N. Bloembergen

This paper reviews the main experimental and theoretical developments in stimulated Raman scattering of light, which has been actively investigated since 1962. The effect cannot be discussed properly without paying attention to related nonlinear effects which include stimulated Brillouin and Rayleigh scattering, self-focusing of light, and modulation of the refractive index. The physical processes are emphasized and no encyclopedic survey of all the data and the research literature is attempted, but a brief historical account is added in the final section.
