Influence of a symmetric lossless beam splitter on a non-classical feature of an optical field

Abstract

Recently, it was found [J. Phys. B: At. Mol. & Opt. Phys. 38 , 665 (2005)] that amplitude-squared squeezing, a non-classical feature, can be enhanced during linear mixing with a coherent light beam using a symmetric lossless beam splitter. Here, another example is reported of enhancement of an easily detectable non-classical feature of an optical field in a similar mixing using a symmetric lossless beam splitter.

An example of enhancement of a non-classical feature of a light beam by mixing with another classical light beam using a beam splitter

Hari Prakash, Devendra Kumar Mishra

We present here an example where a non-classical feature of a light beam is enhanced simply by mixing with another classical coherent light beam using a beam splitter. This non-classical feature is amplitude-squared squeezing of a Gaussian light beam expressed by a negative value of or a negative value of the normalized quantity which can become more negative on enhancement. Here, , where and are the density, annihilation and creation operators, respectively.

We propose a quantum-mechanical model of a nonlinear beam splitter having third-order nonlinearity. We show that nonclassical features, such as squeezing and sub-Poissonian photon statistics of optical fields, can be generated in the output when we mix coherent light beams via such a nonlinear beam splitter.

Quantum optics of lossy beam splitters

Stephen Mark Barnett, John Jeffers, A. Gatti +1 more

The familiar input-output relations for an optical beam splitter are generalized to allow for linear absorption by the medium forming the mirror. Beam-splitter losses generally affect the noise levels detectable in experiments involving nonclassical light. When employed to investigate two-photon interference effects, a lossy beam splitter can lead to apparent nonlinear absorption, which, in the most extreme case, leads to either both or neither of the photons being absorbed. The degree of second-order coherence of antibunched light can be maintained on transmission through the beam splitter but any amplitude squeezing in the incident light is degraded.
