Hybrid quantum communication protocol for fiber and atmosphere channel

Латыпов Ильнур Зиннурович, Vladimir Chistiakov, M.A. Fadeev +4 more

In this paper, we explore a hybrid quantum communication protocol that operates concurrently over fiber optic and atmospheric channels. This new protocol addresses challenges in urban settings where laying optical fiber may be impractical or costly. By integrating the subcarrier wave (SCW) quantum key distribution (QKD) with phase coding, our approach enhances the flexibility and reliability of quantum communication systems. We have developed and tested an atmospheric optical module equipped with an auto-tuning system to ensure precise optical axis alignment, crucial for minimizing signal loss in turbulent environments. Experimental results demonstrate stable sifted key rates and low quantum bit error rate (QBER) across various channel lengths, confirming the efficacy of our hybrid protocol in securing communication over diverse transmission environments.

Stabilization of fiber-based interferometer with single photons

Stabilizing fiber-based interferometers is a challenge. Here we show a visibility of 0.96 ±0.03 (phase resolution σλ = 0.012λ) by only single-photon processing with fiber phase variations of 230°/s. Applications range from coherent optical communication to advanced quantum communication protocols.

Analysis of polarization mode dispersion effect on quantum state decoherence in fiber-based optical quantum communication

Shamsolah Salemian, Shahram Mohammadnejad

The implementation of quantum communication protocols in long optical fibers is limited by several decoherence mechanisms. In this contribution we review this mechanisms and analysis their effect on the quantum states. Because of asymmetry in the real fibers, the two orthogonal polarization modes are propagated at different phase and group velocities. The difference in group velocities results in Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD). It is created by random fluctuations of the residual birefringence in optical fibers, such that the State of Polarization (SOP) of an optical signal will turn randomly over time, in an unpredictable way. In optical quantum communication, quantum state measurement is necessary. The bottleneck for communication between far apart nodes is the increasing of the error probability with the length of the channel connecting the nodes. For an optical fiber, the value of absorption and depolarization of a photon (i.e., the qubit) increases exponentially with the length of the fiber.
