Abstract

We consider the one- and two-photon absorption spectra of a four-level Y-type atom with the two highest lying levels driven by a microwave field. We found that in the one-photon absorption case, the microwave field can lead to the probe gain, and the absorption and gain spectral structures depend strongly on the microwave field amplitude. For the two-photon absorption case, the strong microwave field can enhance the absorption. When the microwave field amplitude is reduced to a certain value, the single absorption peak in the two-photon spectrum changes into a structure of two-peak structure with different magnitudes. Moreover, the one- and two-photon absorption spectra can be modulated by the phase of the microwave field which produces a closed-loop configuration. Finally, we use the analytic solutions in terms of dressed-state basis to explain the results from our numerical calculation.

Transient and steady-state behavior of single and two-photon absorption by microwave driven field

Seyyed Hossein Asadpour, HAMID RAHIMPOUR SOLEIMANI

In this paper, the effect of microwave field on the transient and steady state response of the four-level inverted Y-type atomic system is investigated. It is found that the properties of transient and steady processes can be affected by microwave field. It is found that the absorption spectrum behaves differentially for single-photon absorption and two-photon absorption. Also it is observed that in the one-photon absorption, the microwave field can lead to the probe gain and for two-photon absorption case, the strong microwave can enhance the absorption.

Theoretical study of the control of absorption, transparency, and amplification in a microwave- and RF-driven four-level (Δ + ∇)-type closed-contour interaction system

Aparajita Das, Jayanta K. Saha, Md. Mabud Hossain

Abstract This paper describes a theoretical study of the optical responses of an atomic medium to the probe field in a four-level (Δ + ∇)-type closed-contour interaction system driven by two pump laser fields (P1, P2), one probe laser field (Pr) and two microwave or radio frequency (RF) coupling fields (L, U). Here, L and U are considered to connect the forbidden electric dipole transitions, i.e. two hyperfine ground states of the Δ subsystem and two hyperfine excited states of the ∇ subsystem, respectively. Since each subsystem is a closed-loop system, relative phases are thought to be present between the optical fields (pump and probe fields), and the microwave or RF fields. The manipulation of the quantum coherence of the system by the strengths of coupling fields along with the relative phases is demonstrated in terms of the changes occurring in the absorption of the probe field by the medium. The probe absorption and dispersion profiles are extracted by numerically solving the optical Bloch equations for the system under steady-state conditions. In this study, we start by illuminating the system with the probe only, and then, by applying the pump fields and the coupling fields one by one, the changes in the absorptive and dispersive probe line profiles are investigated for two distinct cases that depend on the relative strengths of the pump fields, e.g. when P2 is stronger than P1 and vice versa. Furthermore, the individual effects of the strengths and phases of the coupling fields on the probe absorption, transparency and amplification are also explored for both cases. All the changes that appear in the probe signal as a result of the application of different fields are explained by the modified interaction fields or the corresponding effective Rabi frequencies obtained from the partial dressed-state analysis.

Effect of vacuum-induced coherence on single- and two-photon absorption in a four-level Y-type atomic system

Bang‐Pin Hou, Shun-Jin Wang, W L Yu +1 more

When a four-level $\mathsf{Y}$-type atom with two highest nearly degenerate lying levels interacts with the same vacuum radiation field, its excited levels have vacuum-induced coherence due to the quantum interference between the spontaneous decay channels. We consider the effects of the vacuum-induced coherence on the electromagnetically induced transparency against single- and two-photon absorption in the atomic system. We find that the vacuum-induced coherence can lead to probe gain without incoherent pumping. On the other hand, the coherence can suppress the two-photon transparency, even in some cases where it can enhance the two-photon absorption. Another important result is the finding of the crucial role played by the relative phase between the probe and coupling fields: the two-photon transparency and the probe gain spectra can be modulated by this phase.

Control of Spontaneous Emission of a Four-level Atom by a Microwave Field with Lower Frequency

We investigate theoretically the features of the spontaneous emission spectrum of a four-level atomic system driven by a coherent probe field,a coupling laser field and a microwave field. The two upper levels are coupled by a microwave field with lower frequency. The time evolution of the populations is calculated. It is shown that the spectra behavior, such as spectral-line narrowing,spectral-line enhancement,spectral-line suppression, and total cancellation of fluorescence quenching, can be easily controlled by changing the phase and the amplitude of the microwave field.

Inhibition of Two-Photon Absorption in a Four-Level Atomic System with Closed-Loop Configuration

Jin Li-Xia, Jiahua Li, Qi Chun-Chao

We theoretically investigate the features of two-photon absorption in a coherently driven four-level atomic system with closed-loop configuration. It is found that two-photon absorption can be completely suppressed just by properly adjusting the relative phase of four coherent low-intensity driving fields and the atomic system becomes transparent against two-photon absorption. From a physical point of view, we explicitly explain these results in terms of quantum interference induced by two different two-photon excitation channels.

Phase-dependent electromagnetically induced transparency in a four-level atom system

Yang Li-Jun, Ma Li-Jin, Lü Dong-Qi +1 more

We present a method to control the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a four-level system with a coupling field, a weak probe field and two microwave driven fields. By sloving the density matrix equations, the numerious result is obtained. It is shown that the EIT resonance can be split into doublets and the spectral position of EIT window is determined by the relative phase between two microwave fields for fixed intensity of the microwave field. Therefore, the microwave field can be used to open more than one EIT window and by controlling their phase difference we can perform EIT frequency tuning. The structure in the spectrum can be explained using the dressed-state formalism.
